Starting with a mixture of iron filings and sulphur, Uncle Paul awakens in his young nephews an eagerness to learn more about the properties of the elements. Through a series of carefully-devised experiments and conversations about the experiments, he leads the boys to an understanding of some of the basic principles of chemistry. Excellent as a follow-on to "The Story Book of Science" and "The Secret of Everyday Things" by the same author. Suitable for ages 11 and up. Review: It is clear that he loved his sons (who are written in as his nephews - Have not finished this book yet, but am enjoying it thoroughly! Old but still thought provoking and in line with so much of educational principles/laws. Respect for students of all ages, awe of the creation and how it works together, are themes throughout Fabre's works for children. The hardest part of this is realizing that the elder son died, breaking so much of Fabre's heart from then on. It is clear that he loved his sons (who are written in as his nephews.....). So yes, the love of teacher/student is very clear and endearing. Review: great way to learn chemistry! - At first I was skeptical about the approach of this book. But there is really a lot of chemistry being taught without it feeling like it! The explanations of the experiments make it very doable for a student to do them. Much better than having to read a textbook.

Not much wonder
Basically, an introduction to chemistry for children. It is worth reading only because of Fabre's wonderful literary gift. Not much that any adult doesn't know already.

Chemistry as a subject to discuss with the family
I like the warm tone in which the experiments are being explained and the children's perspective over it.
