A lyrical novel that sings straight to your heart
There is a man, simply known as The Man Who Lives Alone in the Mountains. He reads poetry, is an orchardist, and cares deeply for the birds that visit his numerous feeders all year. When an injured rusty wing blackbird shows up at his feeder at a time of year when it should have already flown south, the man does everything he can to help the bird make it through the winter. Identifying on a certain level with the bird, the struggle for survival opens a well of loneliness and pain he wasnโt able to get away from, even all the way out on a mountain. This beautifully written story grasped me from the first words. Its lyrical prose transports the reader to the manโs cabin in the mountains, and forms a picturesque image in the mind as he goes about preparing for winter. There are some hard moments in the book that opened a wellspring of gushing tears, and moments of such calmness and serenity it feels meditative. This book fulfills the desire for when we dream of running off to a secluded cabin in the woods to live off the land. It also has a much deeper meaning in what the reader can assume from the text: a story about the struggle of African Americans to simply be who they want to be, where they want to be. Any way it is read, it is a profoundly beautiful work that goes right to the heart.

I found this book to be a very compelling story ...
I found this book to be a very compelling story! Written in the third person, it is a allegorical tale about a rusty blackbird with a broken wing called, "Broken Wind," and a man named, "The Man who Lives Alone in the Mountains," who is busy doing his chores getting ready for winter. It is a story about this lonely, kind, old man, who lives a solitary, simple life and his attempts to communicate with this bird to help it to survive the brutal winter with his broken wing.On a personal note, this story has changed my life. I have been struggling with my spirituality for many years, and this book has opened my heart and my mind to communicate with Nature, which has expanded The God of My Understanding!

A Fight to Live
This is a sad tale, but also very moving. It would be especially interesting for bird lovers because The Man Who lives Alone in the Mountains is a devoted bird watcher. Broken Wing is a wounded rusty blackbird who is unable to fly and join his kind. The Man, having chosen to live alone, feels a kinship with this creature, and so, unfolds a story which is written as a sort of journal with some letters to a friend included. Budhill is also a poet and this small novel resembles poetry in the allegory and the beauty of language.

This book will bring peace to your soul.
As a bird watcher, I was right with his descriptions of his feathered friends. This book was just plain excellent.
