I broke my left foot 15 years ago and sprained the left ankle 3 times since then. As a result, finding any kind of shoe that does not make my left foot ache has been a real challenge. The boots have great arch support, although I decided to insert my ortho inserts for extra assistance. I found the ties offered extra ankle support without rubbing or irritating my ankle. The sides of the boot come above the ankle, so they do not rub the lower ankle area. So far, I have worn them walking through soft dirt, hills and rocky terrain. I wore them on a rainy day and spent substantial time trekking through Wal-Mart, the grocery store and running errands around town. They have great traction and the material dried quickly. Most importantly, my feet do not slide or lift up as I walk. Nor do my feet rub against the back of the boot, and I have plenty of "toe" room. Depending on the maker of any shoe, I can wear an 8.5 or 9. I ordered these in a 9 and feel they are perfect with a heavy sock.
