Considered to be the best of all the oregano types for flavour. The growth habit and leaf size varies but height is about 50-60cm The plant stems can get very woody, with oval, sometimes fuzzy, dark green leaves in opposite pairs. The flowers stalks are spiky and may be white, pink or purple. Seed Count: 1,000 SOW INSIDE At any time in trays or small pots. Usea peat based compost and sow thinly, covering with glass until the seedlings appear. Keep at 22°C for high germination. SOW OUTSIDE In spring in good garden soil in full sun. Barely cover with soil and water well. It needs light to germinate. Thin and transplant to growing site when large enough. Optimum germination takes place at 22°C within ten to fourteen days. Few pests bother oregano. Keep an eye out for spider mites and aphids. HARVEST Once the plant has reached 4-5", sprigs can bet taken. Harvesting before the plant bloom will yield the most flavorful leaves. Levels of essential oils diminish as the flowers begin to develop. HANDY TIP Oregano is widely used in pizza sauces or sprinkle on as a topping. Instead mix a few generous pinches when making a pizza base dough for a more exciting tasting a looking pizza. USES It's the leaves that are used for flavoring foods. They retain their flavor better in hot dishes if added toward the end of cooking. Heating too long results in bitterness. Dried oregano has a stronger taste than fresh.
