almost all germination stations have three items A cell tray & bottom, a heating pad, and a clear cover.This one has something the others don't have, a base which if used properly can keep the seedlings warm in even the coldest of environments.step 1Go to home depot and purchase a can of "Great Stuff" spray foam insulation.Step 2Purchase a 512 cell tray and a bag of rockwool cubes either on Amazon or at a hydroponic supply store.Step 3spray the great stuff around the outer edges of the heating tray using the entire can to fill the underside of the tray.Step 4cut off the outer edges of the 512 cell so that it fits inside the Seed tray. You may need to remove a row of cells to make it fit.Step 5and the Rockwool cubes placing two into each cell. you may need to pre soak your cubes in A little lemon juice if they are too Alkaline for your seeds.the reason for using rockwool instead of regular soil is that when it is heated it is not prone to mold or bacteria like regular soils.

My first time trying to grow food. I need to follow instructions a little better. I planted some lettuce seeds a while back which have yet to appear. That's because they are a cold starter seed and I left the heat on almost 24 hours. Oh well, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again". Otherwise, it appears to be doing the job.

I have a few of the older model with the foam base and it's a much better product . , the new ones are rather "flimsy"

For the thirty dollars I paid for this item, I would have expected something of a slightly higher quality. This thing is essentially a disposable one- time use product. I used it today for the first time and the plastic tray tore when I went to move the unit a little bit on the counter top. It is so thin.I thought about returning it, and I should have done it.

Does the job, rather fragile, but ok for the job at hand.

Super great luck with getting seeds started. But yes! Like other's have said in review. Very cheep construction for the cost. Very fragile! Must be super careful in protecting it for another years worth of use. DO NOT sit it some place like a coffee table or some thing you value. The clear plastic lid fits over the whole tray. There is a lot of condensation that forms on this cover. When it gets too much, the water will run out all over. Poor Design for that!I used : GRODAN A OK Rockwool Stonewool Hydroponic Grow Media Starter Cubes Plugs - 1" x 1" - 2 Sheets of 100 (200 Plugs Total) I just lay it in the bottom, pour my water on it until it will not hold any more. Drain the excess water out of the tray. Put seeds in and install clear lid. Then do the waiting! Very good results!I really like it, but wish the quality was stronger. Also wish the top lid did not leak water every where. Just babysit it on occasion with a paper towel. All OK!
