overall a good device (but not perfect)
overall this is a good device. Fans run very slowly and the case will slowly cook your HDs. With 5400rpm prepare for a 30C circa. With 7200rpm and a raid, temperature of HDs (in linux: smartctl -x /dev/sdX), will reach 50-55C which is too high. You want to be around 45C max. I opened the whole box and removed the standard fans (3 pins with PWM) and put 2 80x25mm fans 2.4W each (original are 1.2W), so i doubled the vacuum power. I connected the fans to the hanging extra molex available (nice !!). The SAS connectors seem solids. There is some space inside for a card so i might put my LSI-SAS controller inside, with a thunderbolt-3 to PCIe adapter... anyway, overall a good product. Not perfect but close to. I might buy another one.Avoid the case with thunderbolt integrated (the raid does not work with linux). Stick to the SAS version. Get some nice cables, a nice LSI controller in your computer and you are good to go. Lights are visible and flashing.. What can i ask more ?EDIT 3/24/2021I bought a second one and two new fans... Overall a good product.I am running it with Linux and LSI-SAS3008 chipsets.EDIT 9/27/2021I bought a forth one and two new fans. I retired a NAS-QNAP which was a gigantic pain in the neck to mantain/program. I reused all the disks, and voila... mdadm recognized the partition right away. Almost painless transition. Now I have a nuc with external thunderbird LSI and 4 of these boxes (32 HDs in total). All protected by a triplite UPS with a couple of external SLA/AGM batteries (so I have 90mins of power instead of the 10 mins default).EDIT 3/13/2024I have a total of four of these. I run them through SAS controllers connected to a NUC through thunderbolt3. Amazing. 32 drive and all works. Each case is around 120TB Raid.While the case is good, the internal PSU sucks. 3 of them smoked. I substituted the 200VA with 300VA and cut/spliced/soldered new wires through the original internal PSU connector. With the stronger PSU the cases do work perfectly. I believe the manufacturer is aware of the weak PSU, as they kept updating it through the production. If you have this problem, dont bother substituting the OEM psu with an identical one. It will cost 250$. Instead get a 300VA with the same dimensions (just longer), spend 65$, and after 30 mins of soldering you are good to go with a stronger - more reliable - solution.

Could be better
So I am currently running 2 of these units and I am slowly cooking my hard drives. I had to remove the panel to expose the guts of the unit and put an 8" fan behind it running full time to just cool off the drives to about 110F. The "temp" control fans never turn on even when my drives were hitting 145F. I have called Highpoint with no response, so if you purchase this unit, your on your own. I will most likely be adding fans to the outside of the case and just cnc a bunch of holes into the top and possibly sides.I wish this unit was a bit better and the fans would actually work, so here is your word of caution

BEWARE - This Highpoint product is defective as is the support!
If you're reading this review thinking you're close to pulling the trigger on buying this or ANY product from Highpoint, SAVE YOUR MONEY, and don't waste your time. Highpoint is garbage from top to bottom, read on for a laugh or a cry at my expense.After reading many reviews of this product, which many users clearly stated it had issues with heating and fan control, I stupidly purchased thinking I would be the lucky person to get one that didn't have this problem, strike one.From the moment the product arrived in December of 2022 it immediately had heating issues as the fans only turned on when the unit was first powered up and never thereafter. Luckily I had a box fan handy that I propped up behind the enclosure to blow air over the unit which brought the temperature in the enclosure down to 40 degrees celsius. The next 5 days were spent copying over all of the data from my old drives and enclosure to this new enclosure.I then reached out to Highpoint support and Justyn Raygoza ([email protected]) and he offered to take the unit back and perform bench testing on it to ensure that it was actually having these issues. A nice offer, unfortunately after spending multiple days copying all of my data over, I'm now wedded into using this to run my business so I can't be without it. Strike two.I proposed to Justyn if it would be possible to send me a new unit where the fans actually worked and I would provide him with my credit card as collateral with the understanding that when the new unit arrived I would take my defective unit offline, swap out the drives into the new enclosure, and send him back the defective unit. This way my raid would only be offline for an hour or so as opposed to weeks. If for any reason I reneged on this deal Justyn/Highpoint could charge my credit card for the unit he sent no questions asked.Justyn/Highpoint counter-offered with the following:1. Buy a New unit from HighPoint’s estore.2. If our FAE determined the RMA is defective, we will charge 15% processing fees and refund the rest.3. However, if we FAE find enclosure is working normally, we will return the RMA unit as it is and no refund on the new purchase.Um, yeah so I need to purchase another (highly likely) defective unit from them and send back my unit which is definitely defective so they can do what? Tell me that the unit I sent to them is not defective so now I'd be stuck with two defective units. Where's the upside for me in this equation?PT Barnum was right about suckers being born every day, but not today, sorry Justyn, no way am I going to fall for this trap. Fool me once...strike three!My response back to Justyn was as follows...Before making this initial purchase, I should have heeded the warnings from the many Amazon reviews criticizing the fans and heating problems people encountered while using this enclosure.Shame on me for putting trust into an unknown brand. Instead of using word of mouth reviews as my guide to keeping me from purchasing this defective product, I put faith into a company with many many bad reviews. Shame. On. Me!Let’s be honest here, Highpoint was never going to replace this defective unit under any circumstances whatsoever. Highpoint built and sold a defective product, why would you replace it?I do applaud your attempt to get me to purchase another one of these units but we both know it will be defective just like the one you initially sold me. Nice try!At the end of the day your brand is dependent upon customers who are delighted with the products, services, and support that you offer. Highpoint failed in all three of these areas.I will be adding my review, along with the many others, of this defective product and my experience with Highpoint to my Amazon purchase in the hopes that someone will take it to heart before making a decision to purchase any Highpoint product in the future.Have a wonderful day!p.s.
