This old jade carving is a two-sided mandala with two dragons forming the upper half of the circle, their heads meeting at the bronze bail. The two phoenixes form the lower half, their tails curled and touching at bottom center. Within the mandala is a smaller mandala decorated with a pattern reminiscent of the curled tails of the phoenixes. The openwork of the carving is unique and special, with a hole in the center of the smaller mandala, the three circles indicative of transmigration, rebirth, and immortality. Throughout the carving, the fine openwork forms a lace like pattern, accentuating the mouths and limbs of the dragons and the heads and bodies of the phoenixes. This is a fine, highly detailed carving fashioned from a beautiful, clear, heavy, ivory nephrite jade stone. Half of the bail is bronze with the pendant hanging from a gold plated wire support leafed in bronze. The hook and eye clasp of the 12 mm polished fossil coral necklace are bronze, The gleaming fossil coral beads harmonize with the ivory white of the jade stone and the pale umber of the accent dye.
