Both these activities have in the past damaged my trees. To avoid the second, I have had cut and then position a second, or even third, short length off these pieces of mesh higher above each other, in order to protect the trunk of the trees up to a height that a deer might try to rub their horns. Only problem I can foresee is young trees with low branches where I may have to cut the guard to fit around.
