Yep
You know that dude with a man bun who uses some ridiculous folding hatchet from Dick's Sporting Goods to split wood when camping? The guy who buys $100 hatchet that takes three swings to split a 6" pine log... Don't be that guy. This is the tool. Hatchets are for cutting, and they're pretty terrible at it. Hand saws will outperform them any day. This is a splitter. Its a sledge hammer with a blade. Its also coated in a superhuman epoxy lacquer because you can pretty much just leave it in water and the only that'll rust is the very tip of the blade. This is what you use to split logs next to the fire. You could also club a grizzly bear with it should the need arise. Blade is easy to sharpen. Split angle is perfect. Weight and balance are spot on. Best of all its an Estwing, so its an American made one-piece forged chunk of freedom steel. I've split literal cords of maple with this thing. Its a beast. Even comes with a nylon blade pouch. Buy once, never look back.

Great fireside tool
This works well for it's intended purpose. Too small to split big rounds but awesome for the smaller fireside pieces. The name fits perfectly.

Awesome splitting maul
The weight of this splitter enables us to leave an axe at home while camping because it so effectively cuts seasoned firewood. It also is a great aid for splitting downed trees with wedges by using it as a mallet. The factory edge was sharp and true, and this contributes to the overall effectiveness.

Awesome camp tool
This definitely makes splitting wood easier. It holds an edge well and is easy to sharpen. Youโll have no problem driving heavy duty steel tent stakes into the ground either. The black coating started wearing off after the first use. It doesnโt bother me as itโs a tool thatโs meant to be used. If thatโs something that bothers you may want to get the uncoated version.

Eastwing Fireside Friend is now a best friend.
Kindling Making Monster. Do NOT buy those wall mounted kindling cutters, they donโt work per the reviews on hardwood. You need this little wonder for that. Eastwing Fireside Friend. New best friend beside the wood stove and at the pile. I cut my hardwood in two lengths with chainsaw. Stove Length and Kindling Length (about 10-12 inch). Those 10-12โ hardwood logs get busted down to kindling sticks real quick with this, and itโs stress free time. Pop pop pop and youโve got hardwood sticks that will catch fast and furious to light the fire and build up a nice bed of red hot embers for your big fire logs. It ticks all the right boxes: - ready to use, you donโt need to sharpen - itโs solid, heavy, and easy to swing - logs length will determine how much swing you need, 10-12 inch Ash hardwood just needs a gentle suggestion to split. - common sense is the rule, while it probably can split longer logs, you gotta work a lot harder, so use the bigger mauls for those. - Keep fingers OFF the thing your are splitting! This think could remove fingers in a flashโฆ so stand up logs and keep hands clear. Trust me, you will like this tool a lot. Update: 12/16, everyone that tends the fire LOVES this thing. And as long as thereโs no Knots from limbs on longer longs, a faster swing has split them, so this thing is punching way above his weight!

Almost perfect
I purchased the standard blue Fireside Friend model and glad I did for the additional grip and comfort of the shock-reduction hanlde over the leather ring alternative. The 4 lb. weight is perfect for camping and can be used with one or two hands. While it would be nice if the handle was about two inches longer, this tool works fine as is and fits nicely in my camping tool bag with my Husqvarna hatchet. My only nit and why I deducted one star was the poor edge on this tool as sold. The quality of the materials and fit was very good, but the sharpness of the bit was disappointing, event for a splitting maul. I noticed this when I was getting bounce-back or rebound when splitting greener wood. On closer examination I discovered that not only the cutting edge was dull, but it was poorly ground with one side not matching the angle of the other. After about an hour of finishing with a file and sharpening stone, I finally achieved the sharpness I expected and it performed much better. If you have dry, seasoned wood, I would expect about 4-6 inches to be about the maximum diameter for this tool to split safely. I split about a dozen 4 inch logs cut from trees downed this spring by storms which was still somewhat green, so this was a fairly critical test. After dressing the blade bit, however, it did an excellent job of splitting this wood. While I usually use a large log as a base for splitting with a standard long-handled maul, I found it safer to split logs and their sections directly on the ground with the Fireside Friend Axe. This avoids any bounce-back of this shorter-handled maul into one of your legs while standing, which nearly happened to me. I found this tool safest and most effective to use kneeling in front of the piece youโre splitting, leaving little to no chance that rebound of the shorter maul could present a danger. In closing, Iโm excited to find this compact, yet effective splitting maul for my camping excursions. Yes, I was disappointed that the cutting edge was not properly finished, but having resolved that myself, I look forward to using this Estwing Fireside Friend for years to come.
