This was a time when war films were bad.
Oh dear, although the premise of the film was mildly encouraging - as I love to see E-boats and MTBs on the screen, the result was a disappointing mish mash of ideas, very much of the time. One is reminded, after viewing this, of how trivial were war films of the 60s and early 70s, with war dressed up as 'action' rather than acting as a backdrop to good quality human drama. This film, by contrast, is very much B movie grade, as it features all the classic errors of war films: MP40s that fire 2,000 bullets before needing reloading, puppet jerking actors when shot and the presence of a large breasted woman to boost sales amongst men - as if they could be so shallow! Still, no matter, at least the boats looked half decent!

Lackluster And Clunky
This is an odd film with some clunky moments. The ambiance is a bit strange.Lots of dialogue in big rooms with an echo.Malta is supposed to be under siege but it looks too clean, quiet, comfortable and colourful. The failed marriage subplot seems to get equal time with the ‘mission’ and is clumsy and confusing. It has a small cast and a small set of locations that makes the film feel smaller than it is pretending to be.In fact I started to think this is what a War Movie would be like if it had been written by Barbara Cartland or produced by Mills And Boon. There are war films made decades before that are far more credible. In fact credibility is pretty weak throughout and in particular the E-Boat capture is pretty preposterous.By the early 1970’s World War 2 films were starting to be made in a bit of a lackluster or offbeat way ( ‘Escape From Athena’ anybody? ) and I think this is one at the lower end of the spectrum.

This is certainly one of the worst films dealing with World War 2
MTB doesn't necessarily mean Motor Torpedo Boat, Here it stands for Mediocrity, Torpor, Banality. This is certainly one of the worst films dealing with World War 2. This Gerry Anderson puppet-like "epic" is on a loser to nothing. And nothing is the winner. I recall something sad about Alec Guinness' role in "Malta Story". But this "Allo ! Allo" version of events in the central Mediterranean bordered almost on the comic. James Franciscus as the American naval commander with the glowing sun-tan was too ludicrous for words. The hair-styles of the participants reflected the late 60's, not 1942. Whoever concocted this turkey deserves to be stuffed himself.

awesome movie
I enjoyed the movie not only because it was filmed in Malta, but my wife's father helped them with the boats when it was being filmed. The reaction we saw on his face when he realized what we were going to watch was awesome.

I Like this movie as it shows parts of my homeland
I Like this movie as it shows parts of my homeland, but mainly it is because I worked in the production part of the movie........I get to see the items I worked on while watching the movie.

It has been done before
The story is typical movie maker's rip-off. It is a copy of the raid on St. Nazaire with a little romance for the ladies.
