There are not two different kinds of vanes. Each vane is made of a lightweight metal with one side polished and the other painted black.

I plan on using this to explain thermal energy in my classroom. Does it work well?

Absolutely! It functions perfectly and is well made. I had one growing up and it always intrigued me. I got one for each of my kids when they got homes. Love it!

Does it need direct sun light to work?

No, but near. And the light needs to be directional. I.E. if there's a lot of light but it's bouncing off the walls or coming in other windows, those reflected waves will cancel out some. In my dining room I can sit it on the table near a large window with sun but in the shade and it will turn slowly. And I can make it turn slowly with my LED flashlight.
