Affordable, no BS, reliable, and secure
This is the way it should be! Setup is relatively easy and I appreciate the customization and settings. Connectivity is great, binds to Alexa as a ringer and phone notifications are fast and, most importantly, not behind a subscription! FOV of the camera could be a bit bigger but it’s no big deal. I appreciate the local storage option of your own SD card, allowing for more local user control. A lot of smart home stuff can be invasive, user data exploitive, or use deceptive monetary tricks to squeeze out your money - I’m very refreshed to find that this product is user focused without sacrificing much else. Pretty close to perfect, I recommend it.

Comparison of Tapo D130 with my previous Ring doorbell camera
I am a long time Ring camera user and have an extensive Ring home security system as well as front and side Ring wired video doorbells. My recent front door camera was the Ring Video Doorbell Pro model purchased in 2017. This works fine, except that the field of view is slightly smaller than I'd prefer, where I can't see if packages are sitting on the ground in front of the door. I had the same situation on my side door (at driveway), which I addressed a year ago by changing out the doorbell to a newer Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 (now called Ring Wired Doorbell Pro), which offers a wider field of view and fancier motion tracking (which I never use). I bought that doorbell camera during Prime days for "only" $150. I was planning on replacing my front door camera with the same model, however this year a Prime day deal popped up for the Tapo TP-Link Smart Video Doorbell Camera Wired D130 for a little over $40 so I thought, why not try it out and see what it can do? I have installed multiple TP-Link smart switches and they've worked well. I took off my old Ring doorbell camera and was easily able to install the Tapo D130. It comes with wedge mounting plates that let you optionally tip the camera slightly downward and toward the side if needed, which worked out perfectly for my installation. (Note: Ring charges extra for these wedge mounting plates). The Tapo D130 also comes with an electronic chime unit that can be plugged into any electrical outlet and plays a loud "ding-dong" sound when someone presses the video doorbell button. (with Ring, the Chime unit is not included and costs an additional $35). It was easy to set up the Tapo doorbell using their Android app on my phone. Like many of their TP-Link devices, it will initially act as a Wi-Fi site that you connect to with your phone to give the info needed for it to connect to your home Wi-Fi system. Once it's connected to your home Wi-Fi, you're good to go and can tweek any of the settings that you want. I've included pictures from my old Ring doorbell and this new Tapo D130 doorbell so you can see the great improvement in field of view. The image resolution is also great as is the night vision. Now for the best part. My previous Ring doorbell requires a subscription plan to be useable. The only way any Ring video can be recorded (after a free 30-day trial period) is through a subscription plan which starts at $50 per year for one camera ($100 per year for 2 or more cameras). This was not a big deal for me since I have numerous Ring cameras and was already subscribed. Also, with Ring doorbells, only detected events (motion, people, etc.) are recorded. 24/7 recording is not yet supported on video doorbells (although they say they plan to support it in the future). With the Tapo D130 video doorbell, there is a weatherproof slot for you to install a microSD card upon which you can record anything for free. There is no need to sign up for an annual plan to get a usable system. The Tapo app makes it easy to watch the doorbell videos, both live and also recorded. You can set it to record just detected events (person, pet, motion, package etc.) or you can record 24/7 (any detected events will be indicated on the timeline). I installed a Sandisk 256GB High Endurance microSD card (about $25) in my D130 and can record continuously 24/7 for almost two weeks before it fills up the card and starts recording over the oldest prior videos (loop recording). They recommend using a high endurance microSD card, specifically made for such use. The unit will accept up to a 512GB card if you want to keep well over 3 weeks' worth of continuous 24/7 recordings on hand. I'm not sure why you'd want to sign up for a storage subscription. They will only store event videos online (not continuous 24/7 recording). The only real benefit I see with a subscription is that they will include a snapshot of the event photo when they send an alert to your phone. No photo is sent if you don't subscribe, just the alert. They will also tell you what kind of event occurred to trigger the alert (person detection, pet, motion, etc.). Also, having a subscription enables you to access your video online through a web browser. Without a subscription, you need to use their phone app to access things. Speaking of the Tapo Android phone app, it is very nicely done. I've used it before for their smart switches and find it to be much easier to program smart automations compared to the Alexa routines. For instance, whenever the doorbell camera detects motion at night, I have it automatically turn on my porch light for 10 minutes (I use a TP-Link smart switch for the porch light). The live video feed from the Tapo D130 is accessible through my Alexa screen devices, which is nice. You can answer the door or see who is there either from your phone or your Alexa device. Bottom line: This Tapo TP-Link Smart Video Doorbell Camera Wired D130 is very nice and can match or surpass the high-end Ring Wired Doorbell Pro for less than 1/3 the price. I was really pleasantly surprised with this device. Highs: Great field of view with nice picture 24/7 recording of video Subscription plan not required to get a very usable system Lows: Boxier looking than the Ring doorbell (subjective)

Hard wired, usesexisting doorbell
Best camera for your house, being a doorbell camera, you get a front view of the person seeing their face and full frontal view. Also you can store all the data on an SD card in the doorbell camera itself no cloud storage services required, which saves you money. But theydo offer it, at a charge. Camera gives you two way voice and it will call you if it detects motion, it also has tags so I only have it detecting people only no cars no dogs no packages so I don't get any false notifications. My Wi-Fi is Mash Network so I put a node close to the front door inside my house so it has a great fast connection to the doorbell camera. That helps when you want to retrieve some video of motion that happened or in my case a person coming to the house. I also suggest selecting the tags for people detection only. As the camera is always on pointing out to the street and cars go by all the time you don't need to get notifications every time a car goes by or other things such as somebody writing a bicycle or anything else like that. When you watch the video as well it's high quality image you can always zoom into the video to see higher amounts of detail and closer up even though it's a fixed camera, he gives you the illusion like it was a camera moving, I would even buy this and use it inside my house or for my backyard, they do have a battery version as well of this doorbell camera. Also it does come with a chime for indoors as you wire it to your existing doorbell your existing doorbell will not work anymore as it's supplying power for this video doorbell camera and they give you a chime unit you can plug it into any receptacle in your house so somebody comes and pushes the doorbell on this video camera it'll ring the chime regardless of where it's located it just needs to be plugged into AC power on the wall. I highly recommend this product it's great quality, high quality video and free customer support is great 24/7 you just call tp-link. At the phone number they give you in the instructions in the Box. Also I want to mention that tp-link owns Tapo but all of their packaging is all paper-based I provided a picture of this the outer box and the inner box that holds all the components it's a brown paper based and recyclable. I think that's very environmentally responsible that's also why I would buy more of their products no plastic whatsoever.

Great video angle, quick to load video
Let me preface this by saying I started with Ring (since we have their home alarm) but years ago, the connectivity was terrible on their video doorbells despite having a fast mesh WiFi network. Switched to Eufy which has worked well but isn't perfect, mostly on the hardware side. I do like their app for the most part.. I decided to try this Tapo doorbell; it's affordable, has good reviews, and has local (free) storage for footage. The app/video loads fast but the default view is a small thumbnail and you have to click the camera then another menu to view footage. Eufy and Ring make it easier to view your footage in fewer steps. You also don't get "rich" notifications (with a thumbnail) when there's motion unless you subscribe to their cloud service nor do you get badge notifications (showing the number of events since you were last in the app) which I didn't realize I relied on so much to know how much activity there was overnight or while we're out. Overall, a great entry level video doorbell with no monthly fees unless you want to subscribe to their cloud service. The little things that are missing from other apps is what's making me return it, but if you'll really only look at it when someone rings the doorbell then that won't affect you much. Installation was easy and I like the 24/7 recording since it's hardwired. So, four stars overall. Like the other video doorbells, it's not perfect, so it just depends on what you're looking for in not just the hardware but the software/app. I'll be sticking with Eufy which is definitely not perfect (could load video faster) but otherwise has worked well over the last few years for us.

Tapo D130 video doorbell camera works great in almost all respects and a Pro Tip for Installation
This Tapo D130 video doorbell camera works great in almost all respects. The features are really advanced especially for a low-priced video doorbell. The video quality is good including nighttime. The distance view is washed out on a bright, sunny day but the porch area looks sharp. Installation was simple and easy. It took me a while to complete everything so you want to allow an hour although some people will do it in much less time. Make sure you have a powered doorbell for this model since it is hardwire only. The data is Wifi only and it does not support Ethernet or PoE (Power over Ethernet.) Kudos to the Tapo team for providing good instructions, all of the necessary parts, and a plug-in wifi chime in the box at no extra charge. Be sure you insert the MicroSD card into the doorbell before attaching the wiring. I think the instructions don’t go far enough to point that out. It would be very easy to miss that step. I never found anything in the instructions that explained how the Detection settings work. Although it is all very self-explanatory, Detection is turned off by default so I’m glad I eventually browsed through all the settings and found it. Pro tip: If you want to be able to see packages that are close to the front door, use the 5 degree wedge oriented downward if possible. Without the 5 degree wedge, I could barely see the far edge of my welcome mat. The wedge improved the close-in view by about a foot on my porch.

Wonderful alternative to Ring!
I bought these to replace 2 Ring doorbells. So far I've been very pleased. They were easy to install. They found the wi-fi much easier than the Ring doorbells. The 180 degree lens renders a wider coverage than did my Ring. The motion detection has alerted me to a variety of 4 legged visitors the Ring had apparently missed. The picture quality is every bit as nice as the Ring. Notifications are fast, the motion tracking is spot-on. The app seems clear and easy to configure. I elected to purchase the cloud storage which is cheaper than Ring. Overall I am very pleased.

Handy little wireless outdoor camera
Nice little camera, not restricted to just as a doorbell. It works well as an wireless outdoor camera that you can mount just about anywhere within range of your wifi. The battery really does last quite awhile; looks like I will get a few months on a charge. The video quality is good. The motion detection is a little spotty, but pretty good. To save the battery it only starts recording after it has a confirmed detection, so you miss the early part of the action that triggered the detection. But, all in all, it's pretty good for the price. The app works very well.

A great camera, and a pretty good doorbell.
As an existing user of several Tapo and Kasa smart home devices, the appeal of a doorbell that integrates seamlessly into my current ecosystem was strong. Avoiding the need for yet another app was a key factor in my decision. TP-Link's ecosystem is a significant strength, particularly the inclusion of free AI detection with their cameras. This is the primary reason I've invested in their products. Without AI, camera notifications can be overwhelming or ineffective, and the subscription fees charged by other manufacturers for this feature are a definite drawback. The camera on this doorbell meets all my essential requirements. As mentioned, the free AI detection accurately identifies people, vehicles, and pets. Users have granular control over notifications, allowing you to choose between all motion events (which can be excessive) or specific categories. Living near a busy road, I appreciate the ability to limit notifications to people and pets, and avoid motion and car notifications that would create needless notifications. The customizable 'detection zones' further enhance this by allowing you to monitor specific areas within the camera's view. Additionally, the 'package detection' and 'line cross' features offer valuable and unique monitoring capabilities. The doorbell's fish-eye lens is a practical choice, providing a wide view that captures packages placed directly below – something a standard lens would miss. However, this wide angle does introduce distortion at a distance, making it less ideal for detailed security monitoring. While close-up visibility of individuals is good, distant details like license plates aren't as clear as with my other TP-Link cameras. The doorbell requires a Tapo Hub, which thankfully I already owned due to my other TP-Link cameras. Pairing the doorbell with my existing hub was effortless, and it can even utilize the hub's SD card for event-based recording. For continuous 24/7 recording, however, a separate SD card needs to be installed directly in the doorbell unit. A convenient remote chime is included, and its setup was incredibly simple – just plug it in. The instructions also detail how to wire the doorbell to an existing mechanical chime, though I opted for a different installation method. Since my door lacked prior doorbell wiring, I purchased a separate doorbell power supply, plugged it into an indoor socket, and ran the wire outside to the doorbell unit. In terms of performance, the doorbell's person and pet detection is excellent, on par with or even better than my other Tapo cameras. It reliably detects my presence when I approach the door and promptly sends a notification to my phone. The doorbell features a proximity light, which illuminates as someone approaches. Sharing access with other household members via the app is straightforward; my wife also has access. When the doorbell is rung, it initiates what appears as a video call on our phones, allowing us to answer or decline. We can also access the live feed and two-way talk through the Tapo app at any time. However, we've encountered an inconsistency with the ringing notification. Sometimes my phone receives the call, and other times only hers does. Since we have identical phones and use the same app, the cause of this issue is unclear. This inconsistency in doorbell notifications is the primary reason I'm rating this doorbell a 4 out of 5 stars. That being said, it was a great choice and a great value for my purposes.
