One 3cu ft bag will cover 100 ft
I thought the spreader was overpriced; but it pays for itself in time saved. The basket is 2 ft wide; and will just about hold a 3cu ft bag of peat moss if you want to top-dress your new lawn seed. One full basket will perfectly cover a 100 ft run; if you don't "decompact" the peat moss too much. There's really no need to fluff up your moss before adding to spreader; it does a great job of breaking it up as you wheel down a lane. It will lay down a thin layer of powdered moss as fast as you can walk or run. So, you can apply a full load of moss in less than a minute.BUT!! You can't easily load a 3cu ft bag of moss in less than a minute. I tried shoveling the moss out of the bag, and that was definitely a time-waster. You will have to experiment with different loading techniques to discover what works best for you.I'm an old man, and I found it very difficult to hold a 60+ pound bag of moss in an attempt to "pour" it into the basket. Finally I compromised by resting the bag on a short patio table and poured from an open top by leaning the bag towards the hole. I'm sure there is a better way.Be advised that all brands of moss are not equal. I purchased my moss at a local Lowes Home Improvement Store for about 11 or 12 bucks per 3cu ft bag. After applying four bags to my lawn, I ended up with hardly any "debris" left in the basket. (Wouldn't even fill up a coffee can.) Do your own research...some brands might have as much as 30% unsuitable material in the bag. Also be advised that a big bag of peat moss is awkward and heavy. You might need help getting it into the spreader. But, once the basket is loaded, you can fly. So much quicker than trying to spread moss with a rake. Plus, raking disturbs the position of the grass seed you just sowed. This spreader rolls effortlessly. You can push or pull it.Assembly consists of removing the handle from inside the basket; unwind the packing cellophane; then slide handle onto the obvious drum receptacle. No instructions required. The loading port is a "sliding" window which is secured by a press-down metal tab. When new, you might need a screwdriver or other tool to help unclip the tab; but after a couple of loads you can do it with a bare thumb.Don't wear expensive white tennis shoes while using this item. Peat moss is dirty and dusty. After dressing your lawn, you too will be dirty and dusty from fingers to toes.I love this tool. Tomorrow I intend to buy 8 more bags of moss to complete my project. It is shocking to discover how much peat moss is required to get a quarter inch coverage on a yard. If you are a DIY fanatic, this is a worthwhile purchase. If you are a homeowner simply looking for the quickest solution to a dry yard; you might consider hiring a professional who already has the equipment and bulk rates on moss.I figure you will need at least two 3cu ft bags of premium peat moss per 1,000sq ft of yard. Good luck. Green thumbs up.

Time consuming.
Works really well. Pain in the rear to fill, use a large snow shovel! A bit expensive but wasn’t going to spend 20 times the amount to get larger device. Spreads really well, one load does about 100 feet in length. Spreads evenly. Good quality compost, Good compost, so workEd as expected. Could have been a little bit wider, Then would be less cumbersome filling each time. Definitely a good buy. Using it to top dress my lawn with compost.Update. After 3 weeks, still only 1/3 of my lawn done, must say it works as described. Bit the bullet and bought a larger device. Still 5 stars but only recommend for smaller lawns.h

Great tool for adding compost to your lawn
I've used these in the past and decided to splurge and get my own, but was a little apprehensive due to the price. So pro's and con's:Pro's: It does a great job metering compost so you get a good even spread. It's a good size so fully loaded it isn't terribly to push, and not too small where you're filling it every 10 feet.Con's: The price is a pretty steep. For maybe $20 of steel and fixtures which have long since paid their selves off, this shouldn't sell for more than probably half of what it does, but they have the market kind of cornered. I used to rent these exact same units out in 2005-2009 and the design hasn't changed one iota from then (and for all I know it's the same design going back decades before that). Some improvements to the door would be nice. The latch is worthless and the door kind be a pain to open. You have to make sure to roll it one direction so gravity keeps the door shut. If you roll it the wrong way the door will open itself and dump compost out. Seems like a silly design defect that should've been worked out.The workmanship is kind of mediocre. I had to spray silicone to lube the door (brand new) as it wouldn't open very well, the handle is bent ever so slightly, and the cage was warped so the door latch didn't even touch when closed. As mentioned with the price, this thing should be "perfect" out of the box.So it seems like I'm mostly complaining, but all in all it is a good product to have if you are one to use compost on your lawn. I knew what I was getting into when I bought it and would still buy it again if I could go back in a way back machine. When it works, it works really well, but these is definitely room for improvement in the design, and the price really isn't great for what you get.Updaate: Now that Amazon is letting images upload again, attached is a quick pic. The first line is a full drum, and the others are return passes where the finer compost has already dropped so you get larger bits on the other passes. Also on a return pass I rolled it the wrong way and you can see where the door opened a bit and dropped compost in a line.

Works but not very durable
It help save some time and put a more even spread of compost. Con it’s very weak metal and the latch is terrible. This is my second one. First one the latch wasn’t even attached. If I didn’t really need it I would say wait to get a cheaper one. It works but way over priced.

Good for top soil
This works very well, i haven't used it for mulch, I've been using it to lay out top soil and it works well for that as long as you break up the compressed clumps, I've been doing two 40 pound bags at a time with it.

Trustworthy
It was a good product, I just wasn't able to use it for the reason I bought it. I returned it and they were extremely helpful and nice about it. Couldn't ask for a better customer service.

Lasted 20 minutes broke in a day!
This product broke in a day. Metal broke, sliding part to fill it with top soil broke. Didn’t shut well, kept coming open. This product is terrible! I can’t believe how much I paid, for using it for a day! It spreads great, when it works. For like 20 minutes, after that didn’t work right. Slider kept opening. Go ahead buy it, if you like spending over $200 to use it for a day!
