For anyone wanting to know the way Congress REALLY works, this book is essential. My wife spent time in the White House in the late 1970s and she recommended this book to me. I have PhD work on American government, but I never really knew what the daily life of a congressman was until I read this book.Applying the principles of anthropology to explain the behavior of Capitol Hill is a unique perspective. You can find the different tribes and what they do. Things in TRIBES ON THE HILL are just the same today as when the book was written, except that gridlock and inaction from Congress is currently at an all time high now. I have read thousands of books on American government, and this one is definitely on my best list.

Great, Applied Antropology
Great job, Jack! What a well reasoned expose in an ethnographic manner of the Congress and of the staff. Good job from a fellow applied Anthropologist from WAPA!
