The velcro strap helps keep the splint in proper position. The splint is very sturdy and does not change shape easily even while applying a hot iron.I have small hands and found the small size splint too large. I had to shorten the length of the thumb since its original length extended past my thumb joint which defeats the use of your hand for a purpose that requires your thumb. Also, since my hand is small I need to add padding inside the splint to keep my webspace thumb joint immobile while using the splint. The part of the splint that covers the underside of my hand had an sharp point that I had to smooth out to remove the discomfort.I have used spica splints for 2 years, hand made by an Occupational Therapist, and wanted this splint to preserve my "nice one" - So with the noted modification and additional padding I can use it while working outside. I am disappointed with the sizing - hence the 4 star rating. If you are looking for a thumb splint that will do the job and you are not familar with thumb splints I would recommend seeing a therapist to have one custom made.

Fits Too Loosely even when the correct size is ordered.
I sized it properly (7" wrist for the large size) and found that the wrist strap fits right but the device itself is uncomfortably loose and makes the hand less usable. The photo on the model shows a snug perfectly-fitting device. I assume the medium device would be too small on my wrist. I have normal/proportionally sized hands and wrists. I hoped this would be a less-expensive good alternative to the excellent Handlab Push Metagrip, but was not a good alternative for me.

Excellent Hard, Immobilizing Brace for MP Joint Injuries
I had a skiing accident several weeks ago and injured my left thumb, causing Skier's Thumb (traditionally called Gamekeeper's Thumb). If you're really interested you can google it, but to technically summarize it, upon falling I landed on my ski pole and tore my Ulnar Collateral Ligament of my Metacarpophalangeal Joint (MP Joint). Anyone who's had odd injuries knows it can be very difficult to find the right support so ensure healing. Braces in grocery stores are usually garbage and generic. Braces from doctors offices are usually crazy expensive, and major medical companies are expensive and not always helpful. Thorough information or photos are few and far between online, and it can be difficult to really get a good idea of what you'll get if you order. I did a LOT of research on every kind of thumb brace available to the average consumer and I've tried a few myself. I'm left handed so naturally I want to use my left hand for most things but with a left thumb injury I really have to make an effort to immobilize it or I'll try to use it without thinking about it. I have been using a Mueller thumb brace for a few weeks now, and its been ok, but I could still use my thumb when I really needed to. And thats not how serious injuries heal. So, I needed to get something just shy of a cast so my thumb joint would actually be immobile, which was the appeal of this one. I read through a lot of reviews on a lot of websites about this brace and a competitors brace thats extremely similar, and I have to say, I was hesitant. So often, people leave bad reviews when THEY made a mistake with sizing/ordering/etc. That doesn't make the product bad. That being said, I thought this product had a lot of reviews that really discredited this product, and I wanted to write something more honest.A few important notes from my experience:1. If you want to actually IMMOBILIZE your thumb joint and still have a lot of freedom in the rest of your hand and fingers and wrist, this brace will do the trick.2. Though it comes with a little thumb/hand sock, if you don't want a hard plastic shell of a brace, then this is not for you.3. If you're seriously considering ordering this, follow the sizing directions. They are simple. And if they aren't on the Amazon positing for the product, its not hard to do a google search to find the size measuring guide to make sure you've got it right.I'm an average sized woman, I ordered a small left and my measurements were right on the line, so as suggested, I ordered the size down (small), and its a great fit for me. Now, its not casted and molded to my hand, but its a very suitable anatomical fit. The little thumb/hand sock is ok, its nothing special, it just keeps the plastic from making contact with your skin and possibly irritating it. The elastic/velcro band seems to keep everything in place just fine.I took this brace a step further and molded it slightly more accurately to my hand. Nowhere from the manufacturer does it suggest doing this, but I've researched and read enough about similar style braces to know that if you apply heat to plastic, it will bend. What I did was boil some water, drop the plastic in for several seconds, put on a rubber dishwashing glove on my left hand, took the brace out of the hot water and shook it for a second or two to cool it off slightly, and put it on my hand tight, even using a towel wrapped about it to press it more into the shape of my hand. It molded slightly in some areas to be more form-fitted to my hand, thus making it more comfortable. If you try this route, just be smart about it. Hot water is hot. Plastic gets hot. BE SMART.**So in summary, I was looking for a hard, semi-molded, easily washable, immobilizing brace for my thumb injury. This brace exactly fits all of those qualifications. I did a lot of research, read about a lot of products and a lot of reviews, and this brace is serving the purpose I intended for it quite nicely.

Wanted it to fit.
Very sad as I wanted this brace to help me. It looks like it would do the perfect job IF it fit.I followed the size chart and bought a large but when I got it it did not fit at all, too big! The wrist part fit as it is adjustable, but the molded body was floating around my thumb and the finger hole was double the size it needed to be.Shipping was not free and it cost me money to return so I lost out on this purchase.I'd love to use this as I think it would help since it immobilizes the saddle joint but I cannot waste any more money buying sizes that aren't right. If my thumb joint now measures 2.5" do I get a small or a medium? will a small be too small and hurt? Will a medium be too large and floating around me like the large? When I measured i fit a large in sizing.I wish I could try this on somewhere, or have shipping costs/returns covered so I could use this but alas.I will go without or purchase a product I can return for free if it is not the right size.
