If they aren't a strong swimmer it will keep them at the surface while they are swimming, but if they are swimming better, they will lift their own body in the water and the fin will lift out more and keep out of their way, unlike armbands etc.My son started lessons at 5 months, started using this when he was big enough (about age 2 or 3, it was his sister's before him) and was very soon confident enough to not want to hold onto me all the time. One slight drawback - as he didn't want to put his face in the water until he was 4, he learned to swim almost upright with it on, and even now almost a year after taking it off, finds it harder to lift his tummy to the surface when swimming on his back. (Although this may be a boy/age thing, he's nearly 5) He was confident to swim without it at about age 4 (when he was happy to get his face wet!)My daughter loved it as her dolphin fin, my son had it as a shark! Other swimmers always admired it and I often felt I should be on commission as I saw other people's children with them after they had spoken to us.It's not advisable to leave the child unsupervised and until they are almost self-sufficient you will probably just need to touch/hold their hand for a sense of security or stability. However, in the final stages before my children were confident enough to go without, I could leave them to manage themselves and they loved jumping in with it on. It is a buoyancy aid though, so they can get carried off by a current if they don't have a strong enough kick (I would NOT use this in open water, but our local swimming pool has an area with a current flowing round it).The twp velcro straps cross the chest (under the arms) and tummy then double back to fasten - smaller bodies don't have a lot of velcro meeting itself, but it fit my slender children by age 3, and I would say it would go round much larger children. We have got armbands, noodles and various floats but he just tends to cling on to these like a limpet! I thought the swim-fin looked like a good idea and he thought it was quite cool. He could put it on himself after we showed him how - very easy. He was no-where near being able to swim but after using this for a few days he succeeded. He wore the swim-fin on and off for about 4 days. On the 5th day he got braver and wanted to swim without it. After quite a bit of practicing without it he doggy-paddled like a demon! By the 6th day he was swimming a width under-water by himself. The swim fin gave him the feeling of floating at just the right level and his arms were free to move around. He was a bit scared at first because he had nothing to cling on to but I really believe this got him swimming so I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. Having lost my 2 year old niece from a drowning accident, I was desperate for my kids to learn to swim as soon as possible. Not so easy when you have a very nervous child. Anyway, by the end of our holiday we couldn't keep him out of the water (without the swim fin!). It straps on underneath the arms with 2 velcro straps across the chest - the straps are quite firm to start with so I guess with more use they'll loosen up but I'd say if your child (boy) swims just in shorts and has nothing on the chest these straps might hurt at first.The fin tends to make my son lean more towards the water than backwards hence why I give him a float in the water to even out the bouyancy. (Andere Schwimmhilfen schränken unserer Meinung nach zu sehr ein)Die Flosse kam schnell und gut Verpackt an musste aber aufs ausprobieren warten.Einmal angelegt, das funktioniert sehr schnell durch die zwei Riemen um die Brust und über den Bauch ging es dann auch schon los.Söhnchen konnte sich gut auf dem Wasser bewegen und herumtollen und schwamm mit uns ohne Probleme auch im tieferen Wasser allerdings sollte man es am Anfang nicht übertreiben da die Nackenmuskulatur erst aufgebaut werden muss den durch die Haifischflosse muss er seinen Kopf selbständig halten und kann sich nicht wie bei anderen Schwimmhilfen einfach treiben lassen.Die Bewegungsfreiheit ist suuuuper und schnell konnte er sich durch das Wasser bewegen.Ein Weiterer Vorteil ist das er durch diese Flosse gut zu sehen ist da kann man schon mal am Rand sitzen und seinem Kind zusehen wie er am Strand spielt und im seichten etwas Plantscht ohne sofort in Panik zu geraten. (Immer ein Auge auf die Kinder haben wenn sie in der nähe vom Wasser sind, die Flosse ersetzt keine Aufsichtsperson)Im Thermalwasser ist uns aufgefallen das Rötungen an den inneren Oberarmen entstehen wenn man länger im Thermalwasser Planscht vor allem wenn das Wasser sehr Mineralstoffreich ist, das liegt an dem Scheuern der Oberarme an den Gurten, ist aber schnell abgeheilt und hat eigentlich keine gröberen Probleme verursacht, hätten wir uns an die Zeitempfehlung des Thermen-Betreibers gehalten wäre das nicht passiert, konnten aber den lachenden Kinderaugen im Wasser nicht widerstehen und ließen uns hinreisen :)Die Gurte wirken im ersten Moment sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig halten aber gut und sind nicht ganz leicht zu öffnen, nach mehrmaligem Gebrauch und der absoluten Testung durch unseren Sohn der mittlerweile auch vom Steg springt (ca. 1m hoch) wissen wir das die Gurte halten!Auch Rückenschwimmen ist mit dieser Flosse nach ein wenig übung ausgezeichnet möglich.Absolute Kaufempfehlung auch wenn der Preis im ersten Moment schreckt allerdings bei diesen Vorteilen meiner Meinung nach keine Bedeutung mehr spielt.
