Review: Value for money - Some time ago my broadband was upgraded toTalktalk's fast fibre. My 6 year old RT-AX92U could not connect directly and I was forced to use the router (poor description but that's what they call it) supplied by the ISP. I double natted this to my existing router so that I could have basic router functionality - beyond just connecting to the internet, and continue to use my 3 device mesh. I was happy with the performance of my system but decided to get rid of some of the minor annoyances, the most significant being the lack of support for split tunnel VPN by policy. Most high end consumer routers do not offer this out of the box and I have no need for gaming level performance, flashing LEDs or a device a comparable size to a desktop fridge. So at the price I bought 3 of these as a "no regrets" trial. I always planned to Install OpenWRT and this was fairly painless. Its a 2 step flashing process and initially I struggled to find the correct image to use. So I posted a message on Cudy's website late at night and was pleasantly surprised to find the correct image in my inbox when I woke up. Kudos for support. After flashing I plugged it into my ONT and as if by magic I had a full speed, stable connnection with zero config required. Perhaps this will work after all. After setting up my routing needs (complete with isolated VLANs for IOT devices and guests) I flashed the other 2 boxes and set up the mesh. Caution this does require a little bit of technical stuff - once you install OpenWRT you don't get the fancy wizards that will just auto configure everything for you, but its not rocket science. Now I have a stable network with comparable performance to my old system that does everything I want and more. If you are after pure performance in a mesh system you should be aware that this device only has 2 radios and 1Gb ethernet ports. But if you are a gamer I guess you won't be looking at sub £30 routers - or using a wireless backhaul. Its probably worth mentioning that I could not maintain a stable mesh using 160 Mhz for the backhaul but at 80 its just fine for office work, video conferencing, browsing and streaming anywhere in the house or garden. All at a fraction of the price of the big brand equivalents.

**Q: Is the WAN port configurable to be a 4th LAN port?**
A: no

**Q: Do I need to purchase something else with this or will this work for 2 people?**
A: The relevant question isn't the number of people but the number of devices and the area it can serve. One constraint is that it only has 3 ports for wired devices (plus one Internet facing port). But if most of your devices are wireless, it's not a problem. Wireless signal is strong and covers an area that's at least adequate for this level of device (especially given relatively low price). In my short experience it had no trouble serving a house with about 50 devices and maintaining bandwidth close to the maximum my Internet plan provides.

This is a router so you'll still need a cable modem (or another Internet gateway, depending on your mode of accessing Internet).

**Q: Backward compatibility with 802.11n or g devices?**
A: The specifications say IEEE 802.11ax/n/b/g 2.4 GHz. I have not found anything in my collection of old junk it has been unable to connect with.

**Q: How to connect a vpn?**
A: Yes but when I got it you had to update the firmware from the website. There is a VPN fixed version. I'm not sure if that version now auto updates.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works perfect for great price

Excellent little router for the price. Compact, lightweight and very easy to set up. One small concern initially was that it feels very light and plasticky compared to more expensive routers, so it does not give that premium heavy-duty feel out of the box. However, once connected and running, it performs surprisingly well and that concern quickly disappeared. I bought it for my office in a 4x4 metre garage conversion and the signal strength has been excellent throughout. The four antennas clearly do their job properly because coverage and stability have both been much better than expected for a router in this price range. Setup was straightforward and it creates its own secure Wi-Fi network and password without any issues. I have been using both the standard connection and the 5GHz band, and speeds have been consistently fast and reliable. Browsing, streaming and video calls have all worked smoothly with no noticeable lag or signal drops. Overall, this router performs far above what I expected considering the cost. It may not feel particularly premium physically, but in terms of actual performance it works perfectly fine and delivers excellent value for money. Great option for home offices, garage conversions or smaller properties needing strong reliable Wi-Fi.
