Hi, Help! I have an old tub from 1942 with a cross bar and no screw hole. Would this work to cover an old rusty drain ring?

Also you may need to cut out the cross bar so this unit can sink into the hole. I too had the crossbar but I was able to easily remove that before using this unit. It fits perfectly.

Can the stopper portion be unscrewed in order to use this cover with something like the tub shroom to catch hair?

No, but you can easily just remove the whole apparatus from the drain when you shower and use the hair catcher, then replace it after you're done showering. That's what I do.

Will this fit a 1 3/4 ID?

This fits a standard bath tub drain and works very well.
