Stainless Steel Test Kit for Differentiating 316/304 [Packaging Upgraded]

I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in knowing the health benefits or dangers of using Chinese made stainless steel and finding out what grade it is.

Very small but it does work

The description says it can identify 316 and 304, however the extremely limited instructions only explain testing for 316 even though the bottle clearly shows 304 as well. It seems that with 304 the color doesn't change, but based on what it says in the instructions, the color may not change for other types of metal as well. That makes this a poor test for anything other than 316 testing, which unfortunately is not what I need since I'm trying to test for 304. Now the only thing I know for certain about the metal I'm testing is that it's not 316 Stainless, but since it's also not magnetic, I assume it's 304. The point of the test was to confirm this.

Seems to work well. I tested it on a 316 sink and it showed 316. On a 304 it didn't. But it will definitely etch, so only use it on an inconspicuous area.

This product does not differentiate between 304 and 316 stainless, it only tells you if the metal is at least "one of" those two grades. The vials are TINY, and they both come in a box that is only about 1.5" square. The colors produced didn't look as definitive as depicted in the ad.

It could have just been my luck but one bottle can cracked and the other one seemed okay. The instructions said to wait 2 - 5 mins before wiping away however instantly it had a reaction. Like within 2 - 5 seconds. Also all the videos seem to be the same result. However those you are looking for I think blue or red. This one you are looking for brown black. Also will stain your stainless 316 black / dark don’t use on a fridge or anything you need front facing.

The product is designed to differentiate 304 and 316. It's only useful if you know for sure the metal in question is either 304 or 316. It lets you test for the presence of molybdenum which is what makes 316 more resistant to chloride corrosion than 304. Complaining that it can't positively ID 304 in a vacuum makes no sense.
