Great DIY fix for underperforming fridge: need to buy your own piercing valve though
My only criticism is the kit did not include a bullet piercing valve, had to buy that separately. My fridge is only 3 years old (but out of warranty of course), was not cooling properly anymore, freezer was cold enough to keep frozen things frozen, but would not freeze anything anymore. I noticed quite a bit of corrosion around several of the piping joints, so my assumption is I had a slow leak. While that is not the only failure mode possible, my compressor was still running, system was still cooling (just weak). I figured it was worth a shot, and it worked like a charm. I've seen a lot of people online complaining about leaks in R600 refrigerators, I've heard theories from the piping is thinner/lower quality, to the R600 itself becoming corrosive. While I'm not sure, it seems like poor performance has a high likelihood of being low charge. Installed the valve, hooked up the hose to both the refrigerant and the valve on the fridge, then purged the line. (cracked the can open, loosened the fitting on the valve, and waited till I could feel refrigerant coming out. then tightened everything down.) No clue on what kind of charge I had lost, fridge has a 1.6oz charge, I tried adding exactly 1 ounce and sealed everything up. Fridge now cools like a champ, air is -10F out of the freezer vents instead of about +30F before. Make sure to purge the line so you don't get a bunch of air in the system. Fridges don't take a huge charge, so even a little air contamination is significant. If you have a relatively inexpensive fridge like I do and are handy/comfortable handling refrigerant, go for it. The cost of this kit is less than a service call from a repair guy, and I have enough R600 to recharge this fridge dozens of times. Be careful handling things, this is butane, don't discharge it without a good seal and anywhere near something flammable. Just going to install a temperature probe on my fridge, once the temps start rising I'll charge it again. Overall, saved me over a grand on a new fridge, everything worked as it should, extremely happy!
