Take your old aerator out of the shell, and immerse the aerator (and the shell, if you want) in the vinegar, perhaps in a small jar or drinking glass. Takes a while --- a few hours or overnight. You can carefully scrub the surface with a soft brush. Warm (not hot) vinegar works quicker than room temperature vinegar. But, installing a new aerator insert is quicker and easier. This also works for showerheads, etc blocked by calcium deposits which do not have aerators. > The water pressure depends on the strength of the flow restrictor of the insert. Low restriction may cause the flow to be splashy. High restriction creates a flow which is more "airy", full of bubbles, which (surprisingly, at least to me) is more effective in washing the soap off your hands, etc. The inserts are color coded according to how much resistance they give. So I had an aerator that was just really nasty and gunky to the point where the water was not coming out at all, and trying to clean it wasn't doing anything. I replaced that one as well as two others in my home, and there is a marked difference between before and after. It even seems like it takes less time for the hot water to start flowing maybe because the water is actually FLOWING faster. It's cheap, it arrived quickly and it does what I need it to do, so five stars from me. They were very easy to install very easy to tighten, there are no leaks and the water is flowing. And they're cheap enough or even if it does get gunky again I don't need to go through the hassle trying to clean it, I can just replace it.
