Honestly my favourite DIY project in 16 years of hope owning!
As we’re due to have our window frames sprayed soon, we chose to replace the current UPVC units that had white Georgian bars running through them. To buy replacement panes in the same style, but leaded, would’ve meant spending at least a further £500 on the UPVC bill, something I couldn’t justify...but after we had the new units fitted they looked so plain, boring and dated in comparison and honestly we regretted not just spending the extra after all. When I saw this product I thought it was too good to be true, but for a £25 outlay and some spare time and patience (short supply but free) I thought I’d give it a bash. I’d calculated I only needed about 20m but the price wasn’t much more for 50m, so went with the larger quantity. I’m glad I did! After a few different application techniques I decided to redo everything I’d already done, which although laborious I’m glad I did as honestly now I love the windows and the much more modernised, sleek appearance the ‘leading’ has given them.I researched the application a bit and the most obvious and best suggestion was a template on the other side. As we were doing the front door, the glass was much thicker (triple glazed), as well as obscure, so marking the inside to then lead the outside wasn’t accurate enough. Yes I’m a perfectionist, and instantly I realised this wasn’t an afternoon job!So this is what worked best for me! Measured and marked each frame on the outside with a pencil (don’t leave it overnight, it’s harder to get off). Lightly tacked the lead to the glass roughly in line. Re-measured all the way along, pressed a touch more with a flat metal ruler. Tapped the lead against the ruler to create a lovely straight line. Used the supplied tool to smooth the lead completely flat.Tips! I also found tucking the start and end of the lead under the rubber beading using a craft knife gave an even cleaner finish, and putting a touch more pressure on the outside edges gave a slight bevel. On the overlaps I pressed a line into the lead to make it look like a solder. If you peel off once gently straight away it will restick but once you’ve flattened it I’d use a new length as it does sort of stretch.Ours came on a roll in a flat envelope sandwiched between thick cardboard that sadly looked to be damaged in transit, so I was unable to use a few early metres that had been irreparably bent, but I’ve plenty left over even now so really not a problem for us.I believe the lead will weather in time; it’s very silver currently but I read antique silver was nearly black so chose to avoid it.From the inside it looks very natural, I’ve compared it to real lead on friends houses and honestly I can’t tell the difference! For a fraction of the price!

Easy to use.
used to create a diamond patern on the underside of a glass patio table. (1200x1200). Made a simple template out of 6mm mdf cut to the width of the diamond with a block on each end and ran the lead down the edge. Make sure the glass is clean and start from the centre and work to the edges then fix blocks to the other side and repeat process in the other direction. Sticks really well and looks good.

We have used this several times
This is a really great product. We have used it so many times on the house windows on our old house and now on windows on our new house to match up with other leaded windows. We put lead on the shed window as we had some left over and it's been on there for five years with great success. So we have just put it on our new summer house. It takes a few weeks to weather and look good as it's always shiny when you first put it on which doesn't look great but it soon changes.Easy to apply as long as you take your time.Highly highly recommended

much cheaper than buying leaded sealed units
I have bought a few reels of this over a couple of years, it sticks very well to glass.I've it when replacing leaded double glazing units that had failed. To buy replacement units that are leaded is much more expensive than getting plain ones.Although you can only apply the lead to the outside of the outer pane, obviously, it really doesn't notice even when next to a unit with lead on both sides of the outer pane - as it would be if buying leaded units.
