Very good pack
Bought this as the cheap Amazon special had seen better days and wanted to see what a proper back pack was like. Turns out it’s worth the difference in price as the ease of adjustment and comfort is leagues above what I had before. Lots of compartments to stash equipment in. Zips seem good quality also. Have hiked over 250km with this pack and had no issues. The only slight downside I can think of is that bags heavier than previous ones I’ve had, but that’s due to it having a frame which more than compensates in the comfort department.

Light weight, robust and multi use mid-sized backpack
This is a light weight, robust, very compartmentalised and multi use mid-sized backpack. Great fit for day / few days trips. The back system is fully adjustable and very comfortable.

Sweaty Back & Hip Belt Too Short
A number of good design hits but also a number of misses. This is an interim report of this pack while I await Osprey to consider if they will send me a longer waist strap. I have the Atmos 65 as well as Exos 38 Osprey packs, both model of which the waist belt lengths have not been a problem; admittedly on these the customer could choose M size whereas this Stratos 50 has either S/M or L/M but not specifically S, M. or L. Although I am not thin, I am not fat either; my trouser size is 36. The strap on this Stratos 50 is only long enough for me in the summer when I am wearing base layer + a shirt but won't be long enough to go around if I was wearing additionally a mid layer fleece and a double layer Ventile top layer.I bought this Stratos 50 after two years of searching for a replacement of Berghaus Freeflow Pro Mens Backpack - 50 litre, neither Atmos AG nor Exos design features quite match the Berghaus Freeflow's pocket features. However,. all three Osprey have been superior in comfort on the shoulders but have other disadvantages. On the Stratos 50 these were :-1. The adjustable "trampoline" back is not the same design as Atmos nor of Exos - there is a large velcro pad where shoulder straps are sewn onto. For my height, this pad covers a large part of the "trampoline" back, meaning no air flow circulation to cool ones back. if you have it on S (shortest) setting, it would cover even more %age of the trampoline - meaning you would sweat more? See photo of the Exos 38, Stratos 50 and Atmos 65 parked side by side. The Exos provides the coolest back as it is unrestricted. The Atmos 65 (on the right in the photo) has a (very) little blockage. In the middle is the Stratos 50. Top 25% with dark grey (hairs of the velcro arrangement) showing 3 chevrons for my height setting, has no air flow. Next 25% is the hooks of the velcro pad arrangement - and photo shows the holes of the trampoline being blocked. Next 25% of the trampoline allows air circulation. Lowest 25% of the trampoline is also shown to be near total blockage of air flow, caused by a piece of material behind the trampoline ! (Photo shows 6 inch rule as a scale indicator.)Why did Osprey have to "re-invent the wheel" when the cooling trampoline backs on Atmos & Exos were already working ? The new design only allowed 25% of the back to have air flow (for my height setting) (less if you are on shorter setting) !2. No loops on the lid for tie-strapping a pair of crampons (none on Atmos also but they are available on Exos)3. Only one ice axe loop (two on AG Atmos 65 and again only one on Exos 38).4. There is a lower section with it's own zipped access but prefer access and space to be wider / larger to make inserting and extracting of bulky duvet / belay jacket to be easier.5. As for the waist strap I presume it is result of error in manufacture, e.g. if you wear 42 waist trousers, these straps would not fit you.6. The waist pockets are not as big as ones on Atmos but still they chaf my arms , say one arm swing out of every 5 or 6 swings. Opening the zips so that zip pullers are closest to the pack helps as that means they are away from the arms but contents would spill ! (Of course not a problem if you use walking poles all the time.)7. I don't care for removable lid because it is held down by straps left & right side and winds just flap it around your chin so you would have to tuck them away or hold them down with some sticky tape. (I would rather the expense of removable lid to be put to providing loops on the lid for crampons and 2nd ice axe loop on the main body.)OK, I accept otherwise the pack is comfortable enough. However, typically an Osprey pack with similar pocketing features as a Berghaus typically costs more so I would expect Ospreys to be more comfortable. If Osprey send me a longer waist strap then I would reconsider the score but it stands at 3 stars at the moment. Not a good score but I am keeping it for I like the front flacp and pocket; it's good for ropes and wet cagoule. There are many more good points as shown on Osprey website; I also like the two pockets of the lid, one access from underneath for holding cell phone, wallet, hook for keys. The access from outside is for pocket camera, ear protection, eye protection. No need for whistle as that is provided on sternum strap.Update.Osprey redeemed themselves by sending a longer replacement hip strap within the week. This is good effort during coronavirus national restrictions of people movement. 4 Stars. (Osprey also replaced hip strat on a Farpoint 40 I purchased a fortnight later.)2nd Update. The Final Word and dropped a star back to 3.1. Added photo of Exos 38, Stratos 50, and Atmos 65, parked side by side. Note only 25% of the Stratos 50 trampoline back is breathable as compared to Exos 38 where almost all of it is breathable.2. Heat wave of April and May 2020. After relaxation of virus lockdown was able to walk the hills again but on a May morning, temperature at start of walk was 14 degrees and end of walk was 18 degrees 2 hours later, concluded I could not use this pack even in this mild weather due to the sweating. Same walk the following week, although cooler at about 12 degrees, no sweat problem while wearing Exos 38. Ergo, this is the deal breaker even though I like so many of the features.

Quality, light, necessary!
This is an excellent, reliable, incredibly light backpack for hiking, camping, traveling, etc.The Osprey Stratos 50 backpack is only a few pounds. Which for all the features and spaces to pack away items, this is a huge plus. After having this for several years and using the backpack for hiking (rain and shine), canoeing, filling it to it's max and overnight camping, this is a very well-made, quality pack. There isn't a tear anywhere as you can see in our pictures. All of the straps are easy to adjust while the pack is empty or full. Hiking/walking with the pack you can adjust the straps with ease and they stay in place. The top lid of the pack has two different compartments, one inside and out. You can reach the outer one when you have the pack on. Also, if you have it on there's a zipper that opens the main compartment, this is on the left side. It's nice to have when you need to get something quick and do not want to unpack your bag.The main inner part has a large pocket that is against the back. We've found this to be a perfect spot for our CamelBak 2L reservoir. Fits it perfectly. The compression, hip and sternum straps are nice as they all play a part in adjusting the backpack comfortably to you. The hip belt pockets are convenient to have for those smaller items you need quick access to.SO MANY compartments and features on this backpack that make your trip easier.Buy it, highly recommend!
