GRAND FUNK RAILROAD : GREATEST HITS LIVE (180G)

It’s good - it’s a bootleg
I recently got a copy of “GFR: Greatest Hits - Live” - here’s my quick review: (l am neither a writer nor a music critic, be warned …)This is a bootleged album, and while the sound is a bit ‘muddy’, it’s the best sounding bootleg l have. lf you have a moral objection to owning music that the band did not approve be released, this is not for you. l’m glad l have it but l do not consider it to be an essential part of the GFR catalog. As you can see it is colored vinyl, which is notorious for poor sound quality. Total running time is between 51 and 52 minutes. These three shows were either TV broadcasts, or radio simulcasts, so the band gave permission to record them, but not sell them.l won’t critique the ten songs, you can see them listed in the pictures & you can see at which of three shows they were taped. l will say though that “Paranoid” was a most excellent version - Dennis Bellinger on bass. Also, Mel’s bass on “Footstompin’” is beautifully nasty! These guys are good and the musicianship throughout is outstanding. Note that track 3 on Side 1 is not shown on the back cover but it *is* on the record label: “Gimme Shelter”. l believe this song was recorded at the Budokan show, as l did not hear a keyboard (but l have only listened once, so far). Each song pretty much fades out, then the next song fades in or is cut in quickly - no attempt is made to give that, ‘you’re at a concert’ feel to it.All in all, l’m glad l own it, but it is not an essential GFR album (even ‘What’s Funk’ is more essential than this, bcz it is an official recording). l’ll play it on ocassion, but l won’t bother transfering it to a digital format (for the Jeep). When l want live GFR, their four legit releases have everything l need.☮️EDIT: I PLAYED IT AGAIN TODAY. IT’S BETTER THAN MY INITIAL IMPRESSION. lt’s unfortunate that it’s a bootleg, and it’s unfortunate that the Budokan show is not available in its entirety - that songs here, from that show, are really quite good (“Gimme Shelter”, “Paranoid” ….. ). Spacepuppy, out. ☮️

Man, it can't get much better than this!
This is the greatest improved rock band "best of" re-issue since Rare Earth's "The Millenium Collection". I had Capitol's Collectors Edition of the best of Grand Funk for many years. This new re-issue with just their most importants songs, plus about 40 minutes of live performances on DVD makes this the best purchase I'll make all year.My favorite guitar rock track has always been "Inside-Looking Out". Man, does this new issue sound so good! Plus, having a live 1969 performance of it on DVD makes it all worth it. Even Eric Burdon can't deny that Grand Funk did it the best. Plus having "I'm Your Captain" performed live is even more a treasure to cherish.I love the CD + DVD music release concept. You get so much more for your money. Please keep them coming.
