I began acquiring Japanese cutlery a few years ago for both the utility and the aesthetics. For the price this is a very refined knife comparable to higher priced Japanese knifes. It is listed as a deba but if so it is light deba and is more like a santoku or what may be called a funayuki. The handle is unique as the typical ferrule with a wa type handle has been bypassed. The handle is a dense reinforced wood resembling ebony with a very solid feel. Balance is good and natural. Where the handle meets the blade there is a metal flange that completely seals the blade and handle fitting.
