Does this have D2 Steel? Is there any proof that this is not a cheap 'knockoff" of the original?

Yes it has the D2 steel. The box has paperwork that was enough for me and all the characteristics of an Ontario knife. Iit’s a $35 knife so cheap is relative; I guess people will make knockoffs of any price point but personally, I’d aim a little higher if I was going to fake something.

Are these knives from the Ontario Knife Company or is this a different brand?

It's Ontario Knife Company but that's not stated on the knife itself. The blade states " Randal's Adventure Training" (hence Rat) and "Model 2 D2" on one side and " Taiwan" on the other side. I've no doubt that it's a genuine Ontario product and I recommend it highly.

How strong is the detent ?

The detent is strong. But not too strong. I have zero worries about it opening in my pocket yet it’s very easy to overcome on deployment.
