It worked exactly as planned. I had designed one similar device and found this on Amazon searching for "mantel hangers/brackets". One must be very exacting in laying out the holes to be bored in the wood mantel since there is no give in the hanger when attaching the mantel itself. I bored the holes slightly oversize and then rubbed the steel mounting bracket studs with a wax candle to make it easier to slide the mantel on to the them. The shoulders of these studs are square on the outside ends. I beveled them slightly with a grinder to prevent them from digging into the sides of the holes as the mantel is slid on to them. This is especially important when dealing with more than two studs.negatives - There is really nothing to do about this, but the 1/4 inch steel plate that makes up the base of the mount will cause the mantle to stand off the mounting surface that 1/4 inch. I could have routed out the back of the mantle and let it set flush against the wall, but this wood was over 100 years old and had several cut nails that were used in the original construction the recycled beam was used in. They would have eaten up router bits.

These holders were just what we needed to hang a very heavy piece of wood for our floating mantle. Can’t see them at all and they don’t bend or sag!!!
