Dan Snow explains clearly with great historic footage mixed with present day colour filming
Bought this prior to my visit to observe the centenary of the start of the Battle of The Somme. Dan Snow explains clearly with great historic footage mixed with present day colour filming. You feel you are there on the battlefields. Great value for money too.

Dan Snow's Battle of the Somme
Good documentary, as expected very good quality and Dan Snow is very interesting to watch.I however felt that there could have been more detail and explanation about the film that was a central feature of the documentary, especially such points as how they tracked down the locations in the film etc. thus only 4 stars.

Dan does it again.. excellent advertisement for historical research.
I bought this as a compliment to the Tony Robinson and it far exceeded Mr Robinsons abysmal effort. From beginning to end compelling viewing and attention holding interviews. The skilful interlacing of archive video with the modern day locale was captivating. Didn't shy away from difficult topics, and educational. Terrific value for money. Well done.

Great dvd
I was more than pleased with this DVD. It is a must buy for those interested in world war 1 battle of the Somme. Dan Snow makes this interesting that you will watch it more than once.

Disappointing.
As an admirer of Dan Snow, I was a little disappointed with this one. It is really rather repetitious. There are endless scenes of men marching up to the front line, walking through the trenches, and walking back from the front line. These shots are interspersed with men having a rest/food/smiling and laughing (and occasionally firing artillery). The film is silent, but Dan keeps up a steady commentary in a fairly neutral but interested tone.A far better film, in my view is the BBC's drama documentary "The Somme, from Defeat to Victory". This is not only a modern (excellent) re-enactment of the battle, but also contains some 1916 re-enactment archive film as well (including the winning of a VC).If it's good archive film you're after (but not just of the Somme), I would recommend the IWM film "Flashback: The First World War". This little gem is a collection of 2 minute clips of various aspects of WW1 (including the birth of the RAF and the death of the Red Baron).

DEFINITELY WORTH A LOOK
Watched this last night and, at first, thought it might not be that good with Dan Snow just wandering around. Kept on watching and thoroughly enjoyed it. Informative, well researched and, above all, INTERESTING.

Some good footage of events and very cleverly done as well
Some good footage of events and very cleverly done as well. I think the title is a tad misleading as it is a film about a film.
