Befriending Our Desires Paperback – September 14, 2016

Great book for opening what God has put on your heart for some time now, but what you and I struggle to identify and allow to come forward. The author opens self examination for the reader and pins it to historical information and psychology insight.

I read this book as research for group project in a doctorate program. A great book on how our desires are needed in the process of being discipled in Christ. Not a shallow book about how to get saved and go to heaven, but one that deals with the realities of this life as well as the eternal.

This book has changed the way I pray. Step by step it has been leading me through a process of discovering what it is I really want - and the wanting beneath the wanting. What is holy and of God is not remote, but close, very close, and part of that wanting.The blurbs on the back of the original hardcover dust cover are far more eloquent; even better, they're true. "Magnificently articulates a God and a spirituality characterized by passion desire, vulnerability and eros." " ..helps us to understand...that or desires are not enemies but friends of spiritual life."

Our desires in all their forms are our way to God. We rob ourselves of participating into the immensity of God when we settle for momentary discoveries and experiences of God. The book proposes a spirituality of pilgrimage rather than settlement.

In searching for a deeper concept of desire, I am left with more questions and confusion but hoping that as I keep seeking, I will grasp the concepts God wants me to know in this intimate journey.

This is one of the most captivating books I have ever read on the essential role desire plays in the transforming work of Christ in us. As someone who grew up with a Baptist background where desires were something to flee and renounce, this book compellingly demonstrates that connection to our God-given, deepest desires is a journey that excavates our true selves...the people we were created to be at the foundations of the world, in wholeness, with passion, and life! This will become a key book for me here forward in the sacred work of both tending to my own soul, and those whom I serve.
