Are they perfect for every sharpening need, the answer is no. This set of stones is PERFECT for beginners and moderately experiences users. I used the stones to sharpen ALL of our high quality kitchen knives. The stones worked well and held up to me sharpening 12 knives in 1 session. To be clear, these knives were so sharp, my wife cut her "Plastic" mat in the middle and ruined it. I had to get her a new "wooden" one. The stones are worth the money. And the shape stone does a great job. Make sure you use it with each new session. Take your time, and use a good form when you are doing the shaping and polishing. Shaping with 400/1000 and polishing with 3000/8000. I would recommend a strop to polish between use. Best of luck. Review: Amazing Value. High Quality Stones in Perfect Grits. - This is a great deal. You’re getting four high quality stones in a well chosen array of grits for about the cost of a single high-end 1000-grit stone from Shapton or Naniwa. Plus you get a flattening stone and a bamboo stone holder. Also note that the choice of grits is exactly what you would select if you were choosing for yourself. There’s none of the rip-off in grit selection that you see in some kits (I’m looking at you Edge Pro Apex 3) where you multiple very coarse grits (120, 220) plus an unnecessary intermediate grit (600), so that out of five stones only two are really useful (400, 1000). Here there’s a 400 grit to set your edge, a 1000 grit to do most of the sharpening, and a 3000 grit for finishing. Also there’s an 8000 grit if you want to polish your edge. Knife Planet, which put this package together, must have decided to put together the perfect introductory sharpening package and sell it at minimal profit in order to entice customers into the world of hand-sharpening. The only compromise seems to be that the stones are slightly shorter and narrower than the typical full-size 8.3” x 2.8” Naniwa stone, but they’re still a quite usable size. In fact they're actually larger than the stones that Shapton sells in its $330 Glass Stone Seven kit. I did some research before buying this kit, and as far as I can tell there is no better and cheaper way to get into water stone sharpening: for $70 you are ready to go with a full set of good quality stones. The alternatives that I considered were getting two stones from Naniwa (Chosera 800 and 3000) or three stones from Shapton (Shapton Glass HR 500, 1000, and 5000 grit). Plus a stone holder and a flattening stone. These would have been the best stones on the market, but it would have cost $240 for the Naniwa option or $255 for the Shapton option.

Good product
I've been using these stones for several years now and over all they work well. I keep them in a container with water so they never dry out, I hone them so they stay flat but the less grit stones, 400, 800 have become very smooth and don't work like they did when new. Not sure what the problem is. I've tried resurfacing them with the honing stone but it just doesn't remove the material down to a new surface. With a little practice you can get a wickedly sharp knife.

Nice "All in One" knife sharpening kit
All around, this is a great knife sharpening kit for the price and should suffice for the average knife owner. I use the kit to occasionally sharpen Henckel International knives and it works very well. The two double stones (400, 1000, 3000, 8000 grit) included in the kit are a good enough assortment of grits that will give your knives a very sharp consistent edge. If you plan to use your kit more than a few times, which causes wear and tear on the sharpening stones, then I suggest buying the kit that includes the flattening stone as the flattening stone allows you to resurface your sharpening stones, which is a necessity, unless you want to damage your knives. Once again, for the price, this is a great "all inclusive" kit for the average knife owner.

Great Stones, great packaging, great info.
Full disclosure, I've been sharpening knives for about 25 years. I'm extremely picky about my knives and I have several different stones. I do prefer water stones and use those most often. This set is easily worth the money. It comes very well packaged with a great box (that you can store the stones in) and some literature about sharpening and it includes a website for videos on how to use their product if you are new to whetstones. All the stones I received were in perfect shape, no nicks, fractures, or damage of any kind. The kit comes with rubber bases, which are helpful if you use the stone on a slippery surface (like a cutting board) and a wood base if you put your stone on a towel etc. I haven't used these yet, but I have used enough whetstones that I can tell they are of good quality and the grain is as marked. I'm very happy with these. Update*** used both stones today and I'm extremely happy. Great stones for a great price.

Great bargain for hand sharpening
This is a great sharpening set. It has all you need to achieve a razor edge. Previously, I had a hodgepodge mix of sharpeners that I used to get decent results. Nothing great, but what I had to get started with. This set is awesome. I am able to get awesome, sharp edges with it. It took me a little getting used to because I had a diamond stone before this, so I didn’t have to use the whole stone. This set is teaching me to use the whole stone so I don’t make a divot in the middle of the stones and am getting a more uniform wear pattern. The flattening stone quickly fixed any issue I had caused to the stones due to inexperience. I would highly recommend this set to anyone getting into sharpening.

Adequate but not the greatest thing since sliced bread
As an entry level it was ok. The flattening stone and angle jig is a plus. However the 400 grit stone did not throw a burr as quickly as I was lead to believe. The 3000 grit stone was flawed in the sense that pieces of stone seemed to break off causing me to redo some work. My setup allowed me to use adequate amounts of water to keep the stones from clogging along with the stone flattener to keep the surface fresh. My Kershaw folding knife sharpened quickly, where my stainless kitchen knives of some quality took a bit longer. A decent product, with some flaws, the failings of the 3000 grit stone should be addressed though. This is a product that takes some learning. It is tedious and time consuming this is not a fast proces. The edge produced is adequate but not overwhelmingly sharp.

Flat stone - poor QC - Surprisingly good customer service!
Most of this kit is good. However the flattening stone has not been lapped in after it was cast and is bumpy and bubbly, meaning that the flat stone is not flat and will score groves into the other stones if used. Will have to lap it in myself Edit: I was not goven an option to contact the seller through Amazons systems, i could only deal with Amazon directly... However the sell contacted me directly in relation to my review and were falling over themselves to make it right. They sent me a full new kit that and the flattening stone was as i was expecting and did not have the issue of the first. I was not expecting to be contacted and it made a nice change, so i have to give them top marks for wanting to do the right thing!
