The Dog Encyclopedia (DK Pet Encyclopedias)

Very nice Library quality book. Nice heavy book beautiful glossy images. Great detail one of the nicest books I've owned.

This book provides clear photos and basic information on a few hundred breeds of dogs. I was worried that it would not represent enough of the breeds, perhaps only featuring one or another of the kennel clubs, but I'm glad to say that it is more than sufficient. Owners looking for a new dog may find the volume lacking in information on breed traits, but I really don't think that it's realistic to get all of that from an encyclopedia. Rather, this book excels at helping someone identify breeds, explore relationships among breeds, and such of that. There is an introduction with some neat information on dogs (their evolutionary journey, anatomy, etc.) and a concluding section on dog care (which I admittedly found unneccesary in an encyclopedia, but I won't take off for the filler pages). Also, very importantly, the index in the back is organized very well; looking up a dog breed there will find every reference to the breed listed in normal font, and the breed's main page listed in bold. This means that it is easy to find a breed by name, and also easy to find where that breed may be discussed in comparison to other breeds. Final note, this book is much larger than I thought it would be.

It was a great gift for my husband who is a dog enthusiast. He loves the book provides variety of information about dogs. He reads the book with our kids before and it’s the cutest thing ever. Definitely worth its value! Also, what a coincidence! We have a GSP/Viszla mix and Dalmatian which are in the front and back of the book!

Great photos. Thick, heavy covers and pages. It explains the history of each breed plus the temperament and housing requirements. Lots of categories and pictures. Info about some positive reinforcement training and breeding, etc. definitely would recommend and/or buy again!

This book is beautiful! My daughter received this for her birthday and she is very pleased with it. We really like the history tidbits that are included! It is a visually pleasing book, which is not surprising from DK, and the information is great. ***I bought several books for gifts recently. Many of them have minor damage to the spines or hard covers. One book came in a fancy box/sleeve cover and that cover significantly damaged. I believe this is due to them being shipped with no protection. They are merely put into the box with otjer items and a little paper packaging. I think Amazon should protect the books by putting them into a sleeve or wrap of some sort to keep them nice during shipping.***

This book is a great easy-reading resource for kids who want to peruse the vast array of breeds included in the book. 4 stars given because for some reason, the pictures included are sometimes poorly chosen examples, and the authors several times chose to give rare breeds a full page spread with a giant picture, while including a small picture and brief write-up on popular breeds....But overall, a good solid choice and a well bound hardcover resource at a good price.

Wonderful reference book for dog lovers of all types!

This encyclopedia is excellent. It is filled with high-quality images and a lot of detail about different dog breeds. Everyone who's seen it always comments on how much they enjoy it and several people have purchased their book themselves after seeing the original one I purchased.
