Originally released in 1989, Bolt Thrower's Realm of Chaos immediately took up residency as a death metal/grind masterpiece, mixing an incredibly heavy sound with a war-based theme and image that the band still employ to this day. This re-issue features brand new art drawn by original Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000's Jon Sibbick; the artist who also did the original art for the release back in 1989. The previously unreleased DVD performance is filmed on three cameras and comes from the legendary 1989 ‘Grindcrusher’ tour that also featured the death and grind royalty of Morbid Angel, Napalm Death and Carcass.

The Only Band In History To Be Endorsed By Games Workshop - WARHAMMER METAL! \m/
I was quite late to the party when it comes to Bolt Thrower having not got into their music until about three or four years ago, but if you're wondering which album is essential to check out, I highly recommend this one (all their albums are great, to be honest). The version I purchased is the Remastered FDR (Full Dynamic Range) version with a bonus DVD of a live set from Nottingham '89. Standout track for me is World Eater, but the whole album is great. This is one of those albums that put West Midlands death metal on the map, along with other great bands like Benediction, Warlord UK and Napalm Death. If you're into your death metal, I'd strongly advise picking this up.

Avatara's review of Bolt Thrower "Realm of Chaos, Slaves to Darkness"
In my humble opinion "Realm of Chaos, Slaves to Darkness" by Bolt Thrower is without a doubt the heaviest album ever released! A friend of mine played this album to me in 1989, it was the LP picture disc version. I fell deeply in love with the music and the artwork and ordered the gatefold vinyl and picture disc the very next day. The next two weeks spent waiting for my massively desired goodies were agonizing to say the least but sure enough they arrived on time and I was elated!! I couldn't wait to get them home and spin the black vinyl version and when I did I was in Grinding, Doom Death Metal heaven! I was so impressed with the black and white comic book style lyric booklet from the Games Workshop team as it really made listening to the album a more intense experience. I was lost in the world of the "Chaos Hordes and the "Space Marines" with Bolt Thrower supplying the awe inspiring and apocalyptic soundtrack. To this day "Realm of Chaos, Slaves to Darkness" is my favourite Bolt Thrower album. This monolithic slab of Grinding, Doom, Death Metal was so far ahead of its time that it wasn't until recently with the advent of eight string guitars that newer Death Metal bands could match its heaviness. This album is a bench mark in Extreme music and in my mind will always be, it stands on its own and is a law unto itself. This album is for serious Death Metal Maniacs only and is not for the timid!!
