How is this for just softening leather? i do not want to change the color. i have a thick vest that is in good condition but very stiff.

This is the correct product you will want to use. When leather loses it's lubricity (natural oils) it lightens in color so there may be only a slight darkening but that is the leather returning to its natural color. The loss of these lubricities is also why the leather is stiff. Be careful and try not to bend or flex the leather until you've conditioned it to avoid causing cracking. Once there is cracking, the leather fibers cannot be repaired but by adding lubricity back into the leather, it will prevent the cracking from occuring.

Is this wax or oil based?

This is straight off the Pecard web site: "A combination of USP grade petroleum products and waxes, including beeswax, keep your leather supple and healthy…just like it’s been doing for all of our customers since 1902" So there is wax in it I would say.

All I read seem to be thick leather items. Is the Pecard Leather Dressing intended for quality leather shoes and other items to protect their leather?

I use Pecards on my new dress boots and it seems to work just as well as it does on my bullwhip. Softened them and keeps them looking good.

Will this darken light brown dress shoes?

This product may may darken lighter colored leathers a shade possibly two.
