The Village [DVD]

Wow this is AWFUL!!
Can't remember last time I watched a film this bad! Acting is awful for the most part, story is boring, twist doesn't make ANY sense, pacing is terrible, run time is bloated more than A politicians expense account, Could probably write an essay just on the sheer number of blatant plot holes, Ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, unintentionally hilarious at times. How this director isnt flipping burgers for a living is more fascinating than anything that happens in this travesty!! Spend the 2 hours more productively.......scratch your backside, watch paint dry, play i spy. Just anything else!

Something Went Wrong...
What a brilliant cast. I've got to say that all the main actors in this ensemble of stars are one that I would gladly consider watching in any film just because they were in it. That they all perform well within the restraints of being in a film that ultimately fails is testament to their talent. That they also, nearly all, have smaller roles than they would, I imagine, normally accept and adapt themselves to the stylised vision the director has for how he want this story told this story shows their commitment to the project.Given that M. Night Shyamalan has directed some top films their trust in him is understandable. Unfortunately, the slow build, levelled emotion of the characters, doesn't quite work. This is a pity because the narrative is decent, the cinematography excellent and the flow is good. However, the stylisation of the characters is a mistake that makes them not only unbelievable - what, after all, is wrong with suspending belief? - but long winded and drawn out. They therefore tend to become uninteresting and therefore the viewer tends to become bored and not to like any of them. In the end you simply don't care what happens.Shyamalan was either brave or stupid in his approach and similar the cast might have been better showing less willing to go along with the project. Having said that Bryce Dallas Howards is superb; Adrian Brody battles will with a challenging role he makes just about believable but Sigourney Weaver, especially, plus William Hurt, Joaquin Phoenix, Jessie Eisenberg and Brendon Gleeson are wasted, buried beneath the pretence of a artistic solemnity.Worth watching for the ac tors and the attempt to make a different kind of fil but man y will find this film the result frustrating

It starts to pick up about half way through but
doesn't really save it enough. It's an interesting and silly concept of an Amish-type community that is even more extreme in their rejection of modern society. You don't find out until the end why this community exists. The film starts slow and stay's slow until the last quarter of the movie. I found it intriguing enough to keep watching but admittedly I almost turned it off a couple of times. The writer should have sprinkled action throughout the first part of the film. I thought I was going to watch something like, "Brotherhood of the Wolf", very unfortunately, it was nothing like it. I don't know what they were trying to do by muting the film so much.I liked the cinematography, the acting was OK but Ivy, the blind girl, put in a good performance - she really brought the emotions alive. You won't miss anything if you don't see this film.

There you go another M. Night Shyamalan's great film.
I am big fan of M. Night Shyamalan's movies. He worked really hard, went through hell to become a prestigious and great filmmaker. Every single movie he made was the result of calculated risk and successful film. His art of storytelling is amazing. I really love his movies. The Village had great cast, great cinematography, great music, color grading, editing. What else to complain about? Nothing. Really! After my 3rd time watching this film, it still sounds new to me. His movies are in the history of filmmaking next to other legends. Thanks Mr. Shyamalan for another good film. Respect!

The Village
Complete with village idiot, who wrote and directed it. It's a story of some modern day Amish-like separatist community with their own folklore, managed by the elders, designed to maintain their isolation. In trying to portray this, the director seems to have persuaded the entire cast (some of whom are well regarded actors) to pull off some really awful acting. The original idea seems good, but the story and its execution made for a quite boring film.

Meh
Good cast and decent acting, very meh pay off like most of M.Nights movies lol. Always has an interesting idea but executes it poorly lol. Only movies of his I can enjoy are signs, unbreakable and the 6th sense lol. He can write and direct good movies but half the stuff he makes now is just crap lol. This is worth a watch just to see it, just dont expect to be blown away or anything lol.

Slow, thrilling with a twist
Not my favourite Night Shyamalan movie but I still loved that thrilling atmosphere without the big special effects that we can see in blockbusters. The pace of the movie might seems slow but it describes the pace of the life in the village (not saying more since I don't want to spoil). Good twist at the end.
