what does the back of the pieces look like? are they brown cardboard?

I don’t have the puzzle with me it’s with my grandson

is there anything special about the box, or could the box be discarded and the pieces packed in a baggie in a suitcase?

The pieces can be packed. I would cut the picture off of the box though so the child can see the picture.
