Q: I play clawhammer banjo and my instructor just gave me a Freedom pick. I like it, but what size works best for the middle finger?

As others have said, it depends on the size of your fingers. I also found the size of these picks run small. The large picks were too small for my big fingers. Also, note these picks are made from Delrin, which is a very strong and deformation-resistant plastic. This is a good thing as far as use and wear, but I found the normal technique for plastic picks of putting them in !50F water for 10 minutes and then opening them up did nothing. I first pried them open with small wood blocks (anything that sizes them correctly and is heat-resistant) and then put them in boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes with the blocks still inside. When they came out they held their new size. I have used the picks for a couple of years and really like them much better than any other brand I tried.

Q: How do I determine what size to order?

Ideally you would try different sizes at a local guitar store. If not, look at your hands; are they large or slim and trim? Then order a size. I ordered large and they are still too tight.

Q: What’s the best way to re-size one of these finger picks? I ordered the Large and it’s a little too small for my middle finger.

I ordered the M and they were too small. I shoved a clothespin in it to stretch it a bit and put it in boiling water for about 20 seconds, then took it out to cool. I did this 3-4x and finally it stretched out enough to fit my middle finger perfectly.
