I have to say that I like the overall idea of it
After receiving the Xpad, I have to say that I like the overall idea of it, and it actually seemed to work quite well for what I needed. I often use my laptop on my bed or on my lap, and although I believe I've already taken a lot of life out of my laptop from letting it overheat, I think this is what I really needed. I've considered getting a powered fan cooler, but it just didn't seem practical, and I strongly questioned how much air it was really going to move if I just continued to use it on my bed or lap, thus blocking the fans ability to efficiently pull air. The most simple solution is the best - Create a space for air to move freely through, and that's exactly what this does. My only beef with it and why I knocked a star off is because of how they advertise the size of these. I have a 15" laptop and the original Xpad was too small for this to really work well. The feet of my laptop were just barely on the edges of the Xpad and would constantly slip off. Also if I did put my laptop down on the bed, because the xpad had a smaller footprint than the actual laptop, it would tend to sink into the bed more and the covers of the bed would easily bunch up around the edge of the laptop if I wasn't careful, thus blocking airflow. I am returning the original Xpad after just receiving the Xpad Slim, which has just about the exact footprint size of my 15" laptop. I would not want to get a bigger laptop to use with this (Which is fine for me, because I find 17"ers too bulky anyways), but just beware that if you have a 15" laptop, you probably actually want to go with the Xpad slim. I would only use the original Xpad for laptops that are 14" or smaller. As for those who have a 17", I think the makers of Xpad should go back to the drawing board and release an even larger pad to appropriately cover the bottom of a 17" laptop.Update: After using the Xpad (now using Xpad slim) over the past few days, I have to say that not only have I noticed an improvement with the computer overheating and making my lap uncomfortably hot, but the sound quality is a night and day difference. I have an Asus laptop that projects sound, not from the top, but from the bottom to create a richer and fuller sound by bouncing the sound off whatever hard surface the laptop is on. On the lap, this effect is muddled and the volume is weakened immensely, but since using the Xpad slim, I have noticed the sound is louder and clearer as well.

Definitely works as promised, but a few considerations...
I've been using the XPad for about two weeks and have to say that overall it does a pretty good job. I mostly use my laptop propped in my lap in bed,and the fans on my Dell don't go off nearly as often when I'm using the Xpad. I no longer feel the heat from my laptop burning into my skin, and I can't say I really miss it all that much. Furthermore, I pretty much leave it permanently on the Xpad even when I'm not using it, thus dispelling my previous irrational fear that my laptop would overheat and set my sheets on fire if I left it unattended. The fact that it runs without needing to plug in to a USB port and without noisy fans of any sort is a huge plus. Some things to note: I own a Dell Inspiron 1505 with a 15.4' screen. The Xpad fits it perfectly from front to back, however the computer is larger by about 1 cm on each side. This doesn't really seem to affect the performance at all. If I use my laptop for hours at a time, the rubberized raised surfaces on the Xpad tend to get pretty hot, though I think this is unavoidable when running your computer for so long in such close proximity to another surface. It's going to heat up something unless you can somehow use it suspended in air.The other thing is that the actual physical presence of the Xpad under my laptop took some getting used to. In some places, it adds about an inch to how my laptop used to sit, and when I first started using it I found that I had to slightly adjust the position of my hands, particularly when typing. I stopped noticing this after a few days of use, and have actually come to appreciate the stable surface that the Xpad creates--almost like a mini-desk. I also feel that the Xpad also adds a certain amount of heft that takes some getting used to, though I'm sure this is very person-specific (think about it this way: a laptop alone might be about 6 lbs., so even a pound of extra weight is about a 15% increase. Some people can probably feel that, others, not so much).Overall, definitely recommended, but I'd give it a few days to get used to the feeling of having your laptop sitting on a new surface. And one final note, even with the price of $19.95, it doesn't ship from amazon, so you'll end up paying about $27 total.

Simple design works with 15.6" HP
After having several laptop cooling systems with fans that have broken after a few 'oopsie' moments by my teen, I decided to do a bit of research via CNET on the best coolers and this one was #2 on the list. For twenty-five bucks I knew I'd be getting a sturdy plastic laptop base with four padded corners to elevate the laptop sitting on top of it.Upon unboxing it's not much to see (as expected), but the cooler had virtually no flex which was good as that was my primary concern. My daughter's 15.6" HP laptop fit just fine on it and when placed on a level or slightly angled surface (like a lap) there was no wiggling of the laptop when it was perched on the cooler and she was typing. (This had been my secondary concern when buying it.)The fan noise that had been irksome with other laptop coolers was no more, and so too was the struggling internal laptop fan noise that had been present when no cooler was used. Mission accomplished! This laptop cooler elevated the laptop just enough to allow for proper cooling air intake and expulsion. Its low-profile build is attractive and other than your lap being cool and not hearing fan noise, you hardly know it's there. It does prevent heat transfer from the bottom of the laptop to your lap too, which makes for more comfortable use. It's also compact enough to put in a laptop back along with your laptop, or tuck away when not in use.I'm surprised and pleased with this product, and would buy more if needed. I recommend it, but check the placement of the fans on your laptop before you buy to make sure the design will benefit you. It should also be noted that larger 17" laptops will hang over the edges a bit, so if you're not crazy about that aesthetic, keep looking.
