Q: how am i supposed to wash the backpack if it's water proof?

It being waterproof means that if you spill water on the outside it won’t soak through get your stuff wet inside the bag. It can be washed regularly.

Q: can you iron on patches?

I have not attempted but the fabric is some sort of polyester and it’s pretty slick. I’d be a little nervous the iron would melt the fabric or the patch may not stay stuck. My daughters bag did rip after a month but up at the handle so a patch will probably not be an appropriate solution.
