Whether trying a new technique, getting in some practice time, or working on a finished piece, this figure study enables artists to create their choice of model, pose, and view whenever and wherever they'd like. The latest addition to the series will help artists become proficient in incorporating chiaroscuro or light and dark lighting--a technique used by the great masters to produce drama and depth in their paintings--to define the human form. The book incorporates a new layout featuring two primary views per pose as well as a section of close-up faces, while additional expressions and body details such as the face, hands, and feet are shown in even greater detail on the DVD-ROM. With the book, artists can study 95 poses in strong unidirectional lighting and observe the female form through more than 200 printed photos. Varieties of body types--ranging from thin to plus-size--and ethnicities are included. Poses have been carefully chosen to illustrate important effects such as foreshortening and perspective changes. With this guide, artists can achieve longer drawing sessions than they could when drawing from a model directly. While viewing from many angles and at their own pace is often impossible for artists in a studio session, it becomes as easy as putting in the disc and opening any photo. A judicious amount of photo retouching is done--not to make the models more glamorous or plastic but to remove distractions that detract from the models' essence. The PC/Mac-compatible DVD-ROM included in the book features more than 2,500 high-resolution JPEG photos providing a number of viewing options--on a computer screen, printed out, projected for a group, or via a high-definition television. Each angle of every pose may also be enlarged, enabling artists to zoom in on specific body parts to achieve a higher level of detail. Worth every star
Great resource for any photographer or art student looking for inspiration with their models. The book is a collage of images that are included on the disk; the book does not contain all the images. The models are posed on a turn table and then the photographer has captured an image every 10 to 20 degrees of rotation of the model. This makes about 24 images per model with some models photographed in greater detail or specific anatomical areas covered. The disc also contains a PDF version of the book which I've copied to my tablet device for quick reference on shoots; I've already done a fine art shoot and drawn inspiration from the book. You can also download bonus models from the website with the code printed in the book. I highly recommend this book and will be purchasing others in the series.

I have found the Maureen Johnson series excellent. This particular book/dvd combo does a good job of exactly what it says, light and shade.

No disc included imformation
have not had time to judge and review this book yet as only just received it.Annoyed there was NO reference to this book Art Models: 6: The Female Figure in Shadow & Light having the cd rom included as it stated with issues advertised so i ordered the supporting disc from Live Model Books. Now have to see if i can cancel the order !!! if not going to end up spending $26 I did not need to

solves a real issue for any impecunious artist

Useless for artists
The lighting in this book is dreadful. There are so many reflected lights that the main light is almost lost or even completely lost in the pictures. Sometimes a huge softbox seems to have been used. In all there are probably about 6 pictures where the shadows are useful for some form modelling. In nearly every case the pose with regard to light direction on form is completely incorrect and the amount of reflected light is so high the pictures just look like they were taken with normal "soft porn" lighting. Where there are shadows they are randomly cast and often destroy the modelling of the body by falling on areas of highlight or tone that are essential to show the form itself. The photographer appears to have absolutely zero idea about art or lighting a human for a life study. The pics are little more than titillating shots of brightly lit women that may as well have been taken straight from the pages of a tabloid newspaper. Even for a tabloid they would be amateurish work. Big disappointment. Don't waste your money and especially not if you are an art student.

les photos à 360 degrés très bien faits. Pour ceux qui souhaitent perfectionner les postures et les dessins de nu c'est super.

Great for daily sketches
This book has been a lifesaver for me. I don't have the time to work with live models, but I want to practice my figure drawing. This book is full of good poses with great lighting. For me, lighting is everything, and if there aren't shadows it's hard to make the end product look decent. Plenty of poses to choose from since there are so many angles. Good variety of different body types and weights. The CD is worth ten times its weight in gold. Recommend.
