After scientists Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ) and Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green, Devil ) discover mysterious cave drawings that point to the origins of mankind, they soon find themselves aboard the spaceship Prometheus, sponsored by Weyland Industries and on a journey to uncover the secrets of humanity. Overseen by the imperious Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron, Snow White and the Huntsman ), looked after by the android David (Michael Fassbender, X-Men: First Class ), and backed up by a team of scientists, Shaw and Holloway arrive on the isolated moon LV-223 to discover an abandoned alien spaceship and the truthโฆ that not all is as it seems... "A chillingly classy epic" *****--- Mail On Sunday "A classic in its own right" 10/10 -- Daily Star "It doesnโt get much better than this" ***** -- The Sun Special Features You want an alien world created anew, with wonders and horrors lurking in its furrows? You go to Ridley Scott, of course, spectacle maker and pictorialist par excellence. So Prometheus is bound to be eye filling, with fully wrought planetary vistas and occasionally jaw-dropping visual coups. And did we use the word alien back there? Yes, folks, Prometheus is a prequel, in a sideways sort of fashion, to Scott's 1979 Alien original--or at least it's a long-distant stage setter for that story. This one begins with a space mission that could reveal the extraterrestrial roots of Earth, although what's buried out on the planet turns out to be much more complicated than expected. In the midst of suspenseful episodes (and a few contrived plot turns), Prometheus reaches for Big Answers to Big Questions, in a grand old sci-fi tradition. This lends the movie a hint of metaphysical energy, even if Scott's reach extends well, well beyond his grasp. The hokier moments are carried off with brio by Michael Fassbender (the robot on board), Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, and then you've got Noomi Rapace entering the badass hall of fame for a long, oh-no-they-didn't sequence involving radical surgery, which might just induce the vapours in a few viewers. Even if Prometheus has its holes, the sheer size of the thing is exciting to be around. Because this movie is gigantic. --Robert Horton. Review: Excellent Package - This is a review of the whole package but I will touch upon the film as well. I bought the 3D bluray pack that come with the 2D version of the film and a whole load of extras. 1st: The 3d looks pretty stunning, having watched it through on a 42" TV set the picture looked good, there was some slight fuzziness of some of the opening credits but as a whole it looked very good. The menus have been rendered into 3D and it gives a very cohesive look. 2nd 2D blu ray worked well and had some nice special features. I have not listened to any of the commentaries (you'll forgive me that when I talk about the extras), but I have tested out the feature where you sync your ipad to the film by downloading an app. The film plays and pauses to allow you to watch so,e items appear on the ipad that relate to the scenes you are watching. It works well, was easy to set up and has a lot of useful information. 3rd: The extras are a mammoth undertaking. The main extras feature clocks in at 3.5 hours, you can also set it up to divert to about 26 mini features lasting 1-5 minutes that give you further insight into the making. The main feature is long but covers from initial idea, through scripting and design to the filming and release of the movie. It is very informative and often does not hold back. There are times when you can hear the disappointment as the crew talk about things that maybe did not work or were abandoned. It discusses what the film might have been like had it stayed as a true prequel to Alien. Well worth watching and certainly provides much needed insight into the making of Prometheus. The film itself is a solid sci-fi affair. Fans of sci-fi will recognise some of the situations and fans of the Alien franchise will be familiar with the set up. What I enjoyed was that it didn't feel like it tried to recreate the other Alien films too much. There were nods to it (sometimes very big nods) but that is to be expected in a film set in the same universe. There are plot holes, some of those explained a little in the deleted scenes, which if left in would have given some context to character decisions. There will be even one moment where you might shout at your screen, 'run to the side you silly person' I personally enjoyed the film, however I went not quite knowing what I would expect having read the blurb about it NOT being a prequel to Alien. I know the film has divided opinion, but certainly I think that may be down to high expectations. However, if you are looking to be entertained then this film does that. Watch it in 3D, then watch the feature length extras and you will certainly feel that you bout a quality product and got your money's worth. Just Don't Know? PLOT POINTS GIVEN AWAY
Well, I've just watched this for the second time and ............ I just don't know! There are a lot of things right with this film; the epic scale, the beautiful cinematography, the designs etc. but there are a lot of things wrong. First of all I think that the film tries to reference earlier Alien movies, as well as influences, too much. The scenes of primitive earth at the beginning of the film are reminiscent of 2001's stargate sequence. The scene of David playing basketball reflects the moment the crew of the "Betty" meet Ripley's clone in "Resurrection".The vehicle running over Fifield relates back to the APC scene in "Aliens". However, rather than include these nods to previous films I think that the plot and script (more of which later) could have been more polished. There are some clever aspects to the plot; David the android is obsessed with Lawrence of Arabia. A film by DAVID Lean which is about cinematic grandeur as much as T. E. Lawrence, the kind of cinematic grandeur Scott does so well. Also, T. E. Lawrence had ulterior motives when uniting the Arabs against the Turks. David the android also has ulterior motives whilst performing his servile duties for the crew. T. E. Lawrence also knew Joseph Conrad's work very well (the writer of "Nostromo", the name of the ship in the original films. David is also the name of the android boy in AI. More clever references but............. There are also some incredibly daft aspects of the plot: 1. Holloway (a scientist)doesn't feel it necessary to tell anyone that he has worms in his eyes having been infected with the "black goo". By doing this David is putting the whole crew at risk, including his maker, Weyland. 2. Shaw, beats up members of the medical team who are attempting to put her into stasis, staggers along corridors only to find Weyland alive and tended by David. Instead of any drama regarding the "aren't you dead?" Weyland situation and the "aren't you in stasis?" Shaw situation everyone sits down for a philosophical discussion. Also, she shows no animosity towards David until much later on in the film. There is no further mention of Shaw's violent behaviour towards other crew members. 3. Fifield goes missing! His helmet cam appears outside the ship! Before opening the door would you not get on the intercom? Has the ship no external cameras? Dumb move as he manages to kill most of the "expendable" members of the crew. 4. Vicker's meeting with her "father". Why would she be fighting for boardroom dominance if Weyland was believed to be dead? The way she says "father" is reminiscent of Batty's meeting with Tyrell in Blade Runner. Is she also an android? (Links with this Scott film in a moment!) 5. Captain and crew's sacrifice; there seems no sense of self preservation in the male protagonists on the ship in fact two of the crew volunteer to die for no other reason than to exit the script 6. Unexplained growth; how did the foetus cut from Shaw become the size of an octopus which could engulf an eight foot alien? The movie explores the themes of religion, but, more tellingly, of what "life" and "identity" is. It seems to be as much a relation to "Blade Runner" as it is to "Alien". Who is my creator? seems to be the main question asked by the characters in this film. Did Weyland buy out the Tyrell corporation once Roy Batty had destroyed his creator in 2019? Prometheus is a stunning, frustrating, thought provoking, beautiful film which I will watch repeatedly. I just don't know if this will make it a classic or a dud. I do remember seeing Blade Runner in 1982 and thinking that it was a milestone in cinema but I just can't get past the plot inconsistencies which are huge. THE 3D BLU RAY: This is an excellent use of the 3D medium. It works well but is in no way intrusive. The cinematography is exquisite as is the detail in the sets which immerses the viewer in the film. The sound is also stunning, involving and filling the room. THE 2D BLU RAY: The second disc is a 2D version of the film and includes a number of deleted/expanded scenes and various marketing videos featuring Weyland and David. Some of the scenes add more depth to the characters and I prefer the alternate fifield sequence featured here. THE EXTRAS The third disc is an exhaustive documentary of the process of making the film with various "enhancement pods". This shows the effort which has gone into the production and also offers some tantalising glimpses of cut scenes which didn't make it onto disc 2. It is fascinating, leaving no stone unturned but throughout it I couldn't help feeling that, although the "devil may be in the detail", having a story that makes sense is a vital start for a film. This is something Prometheus lacks in places and why it fits into the "great but flawed" catagory. Never the less it is an enjoyable home cinema experience. Give it a go and make up your own mind.

We were so wrong...
... It's not a Prequel. It's a new film in the Alien universe with a separate storyline. I was disappointed it did not show a back story to Alien 1979 but also pleased that Ridley produced a sci-fi masterclass. A simple script that barely juggled big topics but it was good enough for a theatrical release. I suspect Fox had a hand with it being different from Alien, but Ridley in conferences held for Prometheus did say it is not a Prequel. That said a lot of ignorant Alien fans continued to dream stubbornly for a Alien prequel and got a big shock on June first 2012. I was shocked but ultimately pleased. i long to see it again on the big screen but time is flying. I hope the blu-ray will contain extra conetnt with a bit of more gore, action and interesting dialogue cut out for commercial or for the theatrical release. i will buy the dvd first because i suspect more content is being rallied by Scott for all our viewing necessities. I will update this Pre-Order/ post movie cinema review when i have the dvd. Do not be thrown off by negative reviews or high rated reviews like mine. a digital release will come out when dvd release is made. rent it and watch then get a feel and reconnect with a sci-fi world. switch off feelings of Alien Prequel disappointment and i hope you will enjoy it. UPDATE!!!! ok BLURAY trasnfer is great. sound is very good. picture quality if crystal clear depending on your hd tv and how clean your screen is! lol! i watched the special features on here and realised why they never made it to the full cut. however the engineers on the waterfall should have stayed in because it had sentimental values - one sacrificed to create life. maybe it was a sentence for punishment. redemption by sacrifice for a new world void of intelligent life. There are references to BLADE RUNNER inside the Weyland files. Weyland speaks of a man who implanted memories into the brains of his androids and they killed him for this silly act. another thing i find worrying is that i need a tablet or some kind of "Ipad" to watch the other special features via wi-fi connected to my blu-ray. i found that annoying. do i need to buy this contraption to enjoy the film? that is why i like Universal blu-rays for their picture in picture features all in one screen connected to my PC! i still stand by my ground and say it is not a prequel. it is a different take which concentrates on the bigger picture which was missed in the 80s - who are the space jockies? the sequel is gonna be about a planet called Paradise. maybe the sequel to the sequel will be HELL/HADES: XENOMORPH HOME WORLD and we might get to see Predators hunting everything and marines with steroid pumped muscles and trigger happy fingers and smart mouthed grunts and the usual actress with the Ripleyesque role. We know what to expect now. let's just enjoy a good sci-fi flick

great film in my opinion
Despite all the negative reviews this movie has recieved since its' cinema release earlier this year this is essentially a very good film. It is not simply a remake of "Alien" as some have dubbed it. For one thing, the story is very different as it revolves around a team of scientists on a mission to try to discover the origins of the human race, believing it may have extra-terrestrial origins when similar depictions of giant humanoid beings amongst the peoples of ancient civilizations are discovered. The giants are dubbed "engineers", the team set out on a mission to a planet in another solar system to discover more about these elusive figures and what possible role they may have had in our own creation. The planet they set down on is not the same as the one explored by the crew of the Nostramo in "Alien" though the first impressions are that the planet is uninhabited. A structure is discovered containing a dead engineer and hundreds of mysterious jars that contain a form of organic life, the design admittedly is vaguely reminiscent of the Alien eggs in the famous quadrology of films, the life encountered does give hints towards what manner of creatures you may expect to evolve from such forms. We don't know why the things are present on the planet or what the intentions of the engineers were on the planet, these questions aren't answered, you have to use your imagination and fill in some of the holes yourself. The film is more than open for a sequel and if another film is made then more questions will be answered about the engineers or "space jockeys", it does require you as a viewer to do some thinking of your own, perhaps that's the reason many thought this was a poorly executed film as not all questions are answered. One of the crew of the promeutheus does get "impregnated" with an unknown life form in a similar fashion to the "Alien" films though the process is more mysterious and suttle. The implant is surgically removed and havoc breaks loose aboard the ship as all crew members are affected one way or another by their strange discoveries. In this film, it is revealed to us what the "engineers" look like underneath their strange biomechanoid suits. It is also made apparent to us that even a race millions of years ahead of our own are still liable to make mistakes, as we discover the lifeforms, presumably created by the extra-terrestrial race are potentially lethal to even their kind. The surviving engineer who is awoken from a deep hypo sleep by the prometheus crew onboard an alien craft is attacked by the creature that is spawned from the removed implant, which raises the question of whether his duty on the planet was to destroy the serpant like things contained within the pods. Perhaps his craft crashed and he was unable to complete the mission, it's never explained to us. Far from just being simply another Hollywood cash spinning venture or a remake of an old film, I believe this movie at least goes partway to explaining the "space jockey" found in the first "Alien" film and the possible beginnings of the "xenomorph" species all sci-fi fans are familiar with and made its' first terrifying appearance on cinema screens in 1979.

People are so stupid it makes my brain hurt
Im not going to review this film as such, you'll either see it or you won't based on what you've already heard, but I will say one (or more) thing(s). THIS IS NOT A PREQUEL TO ALIEN!!! Ridley Scott said it over and over again and dumb sh*ts who want nothing more than prequels and sequels to watch so they can remain in their comfort zone and never really have to think about anything too taxing, read subtitles or comprehend plot twists, just refused to believe it. This film IS based in the same universe as the Alien franchise but instead of being a straight up prequel a la Michael Bay (or any of the other directors these days who only play in the safe zone) its simply set before the incidents on LV 426 and is vaguely connected: You DO get to see the origins of the Xenomorph species. The film DOES show you where the huge "Space Jockey" from the original Alien movie originates. The company involved IS the Wayland Yutani Corp... That's where the connections end. Prometheus is an entirely new film. How can I put it for stupid people? Uuuummmmm... You know how your bedroom and living room are IN THE SAME HOUSE? And sometimes you see similar things in one room that you've seen in another because they are both in the same house but not IN THE SAME ROOM? Its like that. You got that champ? If you are a fan of the originals and go into this expecting to see more of the same then you WILL be disappointed. That's not to say that this film isn't fantastic, because it is! Apart from the fact that it's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, rivaling Avatar in this respect, it's also entertaining and gripping. And for a moment I would like you to simply think about the original movies instead of just blindly quoting them as classics of cinema. Were they so exceptionally original to be considered better than Prometheus? Think about it: Alien - Big monster kills everyone Aliens - Send in army. More big monsters kill everyone Alien3 - Big monster kills everyone Alien Resurrection - You get my point... I'm not saying I don't love the originals. I do, I adore them. I'm simply saying that to judge this film so harshly in comparison to films that didn't really accomplish anything more than this one is very unfair. And why is it that truly boring films like 2001 are hailed as "classic" and things like "well it was amazing for its time" are enough of a reason for it to be considered a classic? 2001 was beautiful but boring...Prometheus is very beautiful and not boring. Go figure. I would like to say that Prometheus is also amazing for its time(that applies regardless of the time right?) and I would like to applaud Scott for remaining a truly visionary director and not just kowtowing to executives who want only to make money and don't give a rats a*se about the art of cinema and movie making. PS. There will be another two films for any of those who felt like things hadn't been tied up properly at the end of this film and maybe felt a little confused about some of the unresolved plot lines. Probably the same people who wondered why Frodo hadn't destroyed the ring yet at the end of Fellowship...

A bit of a let down. New Edit! (SPOILERS)
When Alien fans first heard in 2009 that Ridley Scott was making an "Alien prequel or sequel" many of them almost wet their pants in anticipation. The next two years or so of deliberate "leaks" from the set, teaser trailers, and constant comments on social media sites brought the excitement felt by fans to very near fever pitch. I know this because I was one of them. However the result of all that anticipation was a poor film that left a lot of fans scratching their heads and in some instances asking for their money back. It is generally accepted that Prometheus promised much and delivered little. Whereas Alien was mean and lean supremely efficient filmmaking complete with believable characters, stunning imagery, claustrophobic realistic sets, fabulous model work, a truly terrifying Alien, a simple but effective screenplay (people trapped somewhere with a monster picking them off one by one)and convincing scant dialogue peppered with profanity, Prometheus is none of these things. It is however very wordy, people talk a lot, Roomi Rapace is no Ripley, the huge script is often juvenile, a screenplay full of people standing around talking, Charlie Theron and Guy Pearce are completely wasted in silly unnecessary roles. The film takes an age to get going but you do have to listen to all that family angst trotted out by Waylan first. Mr Scott's direction is at best pedestrian and at worst on autopilot. The finesse often apparent seems in short supply here; perhaps he was less than optimistic about the project after reading that leaden script and slow screenplay. If you do get to the second and much better half of the film, you then have to accept generic seen before movie scientists, not only being incredibly unscientific but bloody stupid to boot. Remember those Star Trek landing parties where the guys at the back in the red shirts always got themselves killed so the main characters can carry on in the show, well you can watch this old fashioned technique all over again in a modern mult-imillion Dollar movie today. Not only that but you can see it coming a MILE off. Bad decisions after even worse decisions are made by this incompetent bunch and only David the Android seems to know what is happening or has a real agenda. Played well by Michael Fassbender, the Android was, for me, the only real character in the whole film, oddly enough. The final 20 minutes are easily the best with the film actually at last coming alive. The family angst, the endless talking, and predictable story, finally takes a back step and the action ramps up. The last 10 minutes are very satisfying with at least some answers to why we have watched for the last two hours. The possibility of a sequel has once again whetted fans appetites for Prometheus 2, but Mr Scott needs to dump all the stuff fans don't want and concentrate on what they do. He's done it before he can do it again. Finally after a year or so to think on it, I think Prometheus is a poor and regarded by many fans as a missed opportunity. Edit. Just watched all the extra content on the 3D three disc version and am now even more disappointed than previously. It's now quite clear that Scott never intended to make an Alien prequel, as he says "it's been rung dry" but he was interested in the Space Jockey back story. Who they were, were they came from, what was their purpose, and most importantly what were they doing on that small planet. The story originally submitted was a straightforward adventure story that Scott was unhappy with, so in comes Lost and Into Darkness "writer" Damon Lindelof. Scott comes across as a frustrated writer, shoving ideas under Lindelof's nose and Lindelof, who has said he does not like to write alone, was more than happy to insert any idea that Scott had off the top of his head (the silly rolling spaceship being a prime example). With Scott not really knowing what he wanted and a writer happy to include any idea floated by the director we of course ended up with the car-crash that Prometheus became. It's also clear that the script was even more wordy and leaden than the released film, at least two fairly long "telling stories" scenes were dumped after being filmed at great cost. Why were they in the script in the first place. And great stuff like the TED conference showing Weylans true character as a young man in his 30's were left out. This at the beginning of the film would have explained Weylans character and we would have understood his motives. The character would then have made at least some sense. A fully CGI Fifield was shot and dumped even though it was far superior to the scene that ended up in the film. Characters just vanished never to be seen again. Seventeen crew members and only one Android, if they are so good why not dozens of them to do all the dangerous stuff. Why does Weylan hide away like a naughty schoolboy. Why does Vickers come at all, years in space so she can just bark orders at people, she could do that at home in comfort with no danger. The character does nothing except kill a main crew member with a Flame Thrower, that she knew how to operate, that just happened to be lying around fully fuelled and ready to go, and shortly afterwards dies in the most stupid way I've seen in a long time. Holloway finds extra terrestrial life for the first time ever, but still decides it's not good enough and gets hammered in the bar wallowing in self pity. He should be euphoric and pumped up. Duh. Shaw has major, and I mean major abdominal surgery and within minutes is, running and climbing, jumping, carrying heavy bags, fighting aliens with an axe, all with her abdominal muscles cut right through and some staples holding her skin together. Beyond belief even in Sci Fi. And in the end why are the Engineers so pissed of with us? They made us, we are genetically identical to them, but as soon as they see us they start ripping heads off and going ballistic for no obvious reason. Did they engineer the Alien, did they engineer the Black Goo, why was a representation of the Alien queen from Aliens in the Head room if they hadn't been created yet. What were they going to do with the thousands of goo vases found. Who were all those dead engineers running from? After watching all the bonus extras it is my opinion that Scott is 80% and Lindelof 20% to blame for the mess that Prometheus is. Neither appears to have had a clear idea of what they wanted and fed of each other until all there respective bits and pieces seemed to fit together. Being purposely enigmatic and leaving the story open to interpretation is one thing, but just shoving in things that look good on screen but make no sense is just plain lazy.
