At the end of a holiday in Bali, Julian, an unhappy schoolteacher, decides to visit a renowned local healer, Samtyang, in search of guidance. During daily sessions at the wise man's house, Julian begins to identify the source of his unhappiness through a series of simple questions and answers that point to his own limiting beliefs and fears. Day after day, their dialogue is punctuated by real-life situations and challenges that Julian is asked to experience on the island's mainland and its surroundings. As his journey unfolds, Julian begins to understand how he can make his dreams become a reality and find his very own way to true happiness. From international bestselling author Laurent Gounelle, The Man Who Wanted to be Happy explores the world of new possibilities that opens up to us when we discover how to break free of what prevents us from living a life full of joy.

Very useful
I found this book very useful as it was like looking at a mirror and it gave answers to questions about happiness and I've applied them in my life and it has made a significant difference to my level of happiness. A good book to read after this is the Dalia Lama's cat as it it provides further insight. The book is written in fictional narrative but the pearls of wisdom underlying this story are true and real, thank you for a good book.

A gem of a book!
I really enjoyed this little gem of a book. It was gifted to me by a friend who just knew I would love the storytelling / philosophical style. I do enjoy books like this, where life lessons are explored through conversations and situations. It really made me want to meet the wise old man myself!

Happy, happy, happy!
What makes people happy? What is happiness? What does it mean to be happy? As was the case with Ken Dodd, who claimed it was the greatest gift that he possessed, these are questions this book touches upon but doesnโt answer. Likewise, Pharrell Williams is no more enlightening in his recent song, although he does offer a few clues as to what it might feel to be happy; e.g. a room without a roof! However, the book does provide a plethora of sound advice regarding limiting beliefs even if the Balinese sage, from whom our โheroโ receives it, comes across as somewhat unbelievable. I read this more or less straight off the back of the authorโs other โself-help novelโ, The Man Who Risked Everythingโ, which is set in Paris and, I must admit, it sounded as if the protagonist had stopped off in Paris on his way back home to the States the โvoicesโ in both (written in the first person) being almost indistinguishable.Nevertheless, I liked both books immensely, although this one, which has hardly any plot in the commonly accepted sense, slightly less so.

Interesting and wholesome
A nice way to explore what makes us "us". A book that makes you think and reflects embedding in a nice story. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to know more about themselves and also to everyone else... a little awareness never hurts.
