Bees N Things Carpenter Bee Trap

Wish I bought this years ago...2 years later still catching bees
Been having a problem with Carpenter Bees attacking my deck last couple years. I was told they do not like pressure treated wood or stained wood but obviously they do because they are doing a number on it. Also the woodpeckers going after the bees has not helped either. Been using Vaseline at night once they go in the hole and it has been working ok. This year there seemed to be a few more than normal so I looked up what to do and saw these traps and figured I would give them a try. Was a little disappointed when it said could take up to 2 weeks for it to work, but I caught a bee the first day it was up and 4 more by the end of the week. I was really surprised it worked so well. Highly recommend. Also bought a hanging one but did not plan on hanging it and that trap also caught a bee. 6 catches at the end of the week for 2 traps. Do not see any flying around lately either.May 13, 2015 updateStill love this trap. Bought a hanging trap and converted it to a back mount. So far after 2 weeks this year I caught 3 in this trap and 7 in the converted one. The converted one is in a higher populated area. Just need to place them right on top of where the holes/nests are. Works for us!
I was very skeptical that this would work, but having failed in our other efforts to control the carpenter bees harassing us on our deck, we bought one of these as well as one of the "hanging" versions. The hanging one arrived first and I just sat it out on the edge of the deck until I had time to find a place to hang it. Lo and behold, the next day there were two carpenter bees inside! The second trap arrived the next day and now three weeks later we have trapped a total of 8 of the (not so) little buggers! In our best estimate, we think only the female is left, so now its on to addressing the hole/nest. So I would recommend that people give this a shot, if you are having a carpenter bee problem, and be patient with it. Also, when you catch one, I would just suggest you let it perish of its own devices. We killed a few we caught with spray in the jar (they did not go down quickly to the spray) and we think it left an odor that the bees then avoided. Once we scrubbed the jars more thoroughly, we were back in business. Good luck!

Totally ineffective
I bought this because I am plagued with carpenter bees. Some of the reviews stated how well it worked and even showed pictures of bees trapped by the item. So I ordered it with expectations of solving my problem. I have not caught a single bee and even worse, they totally ignore it. I can mount it scant inches from where they are actively working and they fly right by it and laugh at it. I can then plug their active hole and they will not even consider this as they move to select another site for boring. I just end up watching for them, spraying some spray to drive them out and then swatting them. It is time consuming and required constant monitoring. That is why I had such high hopes that this would be an easy and simple fix. It is not. I have requested authorization to return this as ineffective and am waiting for feedback from them. I wanted to give it a real chance to work, but alas it does not. The trap is attractive, is nicely constructed, etc. It just did not work for me.

So disappointed, don't buy.
I was so happy to receive this item. I have a carpenter bee issue and they are always swarming the area. I placed this right where I know the activity is highest. None were caught and then finally yesterday I got a big carpenter bee! I couldn't wait to check back later when it had passed, but to my surprise it had made its way out of the trap. I'm very disappointed. They can just go in and out of it. Doesn't seem effective at all to me.

Love seeing my carp bees get trapped in here. Successfully tricks them inside. Ha ha ha. I would buy this again.
We have carpenter bees very near here near St. Louis, MO. This thing works. I don't know how it traps them inside, but I go out and they are in there.I love seeing them in there. Makes me feel happy. : )I use this and I also spray WD40 in their holes. Both of these ideas work very well.I would buy this again. They go in, but don't come out. : )

Works Fine; Made in China?
This works fine, I have harvested 4 bees so far. Was surprised to see one bee climbing in and out of the trap. I have moved it two times to be closer to different nests. I was surprised to see a "Made in China" sticker on this thing. It is expensive for the simple design and materials. If I did not get free shipping from Prime it would not be worth the price. Seems like an American retiree with a simple shop could make these a lot cheaper and still make a profit.

Trap works!
Every spring/summer I get swarmed with carpenter bees who love to bore through my painted fence posts. This trap does a good job of trapping most of them and minimizes the damage done.

This version is losing 11-0.
I bought one of these "side jar" versions, and one where the jar is at the bottom. They are hung within three feet of each other, and is in a pretty high traffic are for the carpenter bees. After three weeks, the "bottom jar" version has caught 11, and the side jar has caught ZERO. I gave the bottom jar version five stars.
