Let's Learn Urdu Using Pictures

One of the best basic introductions to the Urdu alphabet I have seen. The book associates the shapes of the letters with funny little images and uses mnemonic tricks to help learners remember the shapes and sounds more easily (e.g. "Be" looks like a Bubble under a Boat, so it sounds like "B"). It gives clear examples of how the letters join up at the start, middle and end of words without going into "information overload" for the learner. It touches on certain spelling and grammar rules associated with different letters and vowel markings without becoming dense and difficult to remember. And very importantly, it uses a very big font size for the Urdu. Many Urdu teaching aids use such a small font that learners cannot easily see the individual letters and read the words when they are just starting to learn. This book uses a comfortable font size. It's really great, even for an adult learner like me.

I have bought this book and used it to teach my children. The way in which the letters are formed links in with the use of that letter in a particular word. It is very creative and has made learning urdu fun for my children - with simple pictures illustrating the shape of the letter as well as an example. It offers a very different way of learning to the books which have been available.

What a lovely little book! This is an innovative approach to learning Urdu that was much needed. For both those that come from Urdu speaking backgrounds and those who don’t, this book helps understand the foundations of the language with a creative approach. It teaches how to pronounce the letters and also how and when to join them forming complete words and sentences. The pictures not only create interest but help in identifying sounds by relating them to things we already know. Perfect for children of all ages who are approaching the language as beginners... Highly recommended!
