Fun to play with, no real practical use
Reading the reviews of how they cut their hands on this and that they're bleeding or it punctured their hand are total BS. The most this can do is give you a paper cut like injury (which has not happened to me). That being said, it's important to understand how to properly open and close without injury:To open: push the metal nob until the spring is released on the other side. Once it is, briefly let go of the item to allow for it to extend on its own. You don't need to throw it in the air, but just a quick release will allow no injuries. To close: put the item standing on the ground with the tip part (that you pressed to open it) on top. Push down with your palm. With your other hand, twist the body of the wand until it goes down. Occasionally the item becomes too tightly wound and it won't go anymore. The best solution is to pick up the item but keeping it wound and then push the items together against a cord edge so it forces them together. (You can use your hands to force it down, but the edge of a table or siding work too). Now this isn't going to be best protection against anyone. It's hollow and flimsy. Don't antagonize anyone with it. They can just as easily find a stick, rock or belt and beat you up. Other than that, it's fun to play with and surprise people with.

Seller is from China, No Instructions, Cane Does Not Work
This seller is from China. I did not realize this until after receiving the shipping information with the tracking number. I ordered two canes that I needed for a production. I tried the trick with one of the canes. The cane is very heavy. Both the top and bottom of the cane broke on first attempt to open and close it. The cane would not close into its original position and had jagged edges at its base. Before attempting to try the trick on the second cane, I requested that the "detailed HD video tutorial" to be sent to me. However, I was unable to view it in the format sent. Now, I am left with a damaged cane for which I got a full refund and an unopened cane that I am no longer needing because I ordered better made plastic canes from a different company. Plastic is better than metal when it comes to this type of canes.

Needs WD-40 or oil to get it to retract!
I had a few of these when I was young. They worked great and without lubrication. This one popped open fine though not to full extension... I got the really long one. But then I couldn't get it to collapse more than 3/4 of the way. I had it spray WD-40 on it. Then I wiped the excess off. It's okay now and it expands further than the first time. I recommend getting the shorter version as the long one is awkward to manipulate when expanded. Oh and the box it comes in says: "Be careful to hit People" Got to love that translator!

Better than the one star reviews, not perfect, and requires knowledge and practice.
I see quite a few low reviews that mostly seem to be from folks who were not aware of what they were purchasing, the actual process of how it works and is made. It is probably heavier than plastic appearing canes, so know that is an option. Some folks thought it opened and would not close ever again. False... it requires a twisting motion at the thicker base, and this technique is easily found on YouTube. Which brings me to the instructions. Four stars as the manufacturer and Amazon could stress more strongly that this prop can be dangerous. Folks are surprised it shot out of their hand fifteen feet, but that is the force required for an instant appearance of the cane. That said, it could hurt someone if it hits them, particularly the face, teeth, and eyes, so be careful. And yes, the edges could cut a person and it looks like it has. That said my came with an easy to scan link to a very detailed and informative video showing proper use, how to close it, how to fix it if it becomes unaligned. Use with caution, common sense, and it probably isn't the best choice of a magic prop for children.

Not very sturdy, not easy to put away, a little too pricey.
Honestly I didn’t expect much from this thing but it was an impulse buy. I was just gonna use it from time to time to mess with my significant other. It’s a little pricey for something made by inexpensive metal, but I didn’t mind that.I had issues collapsing it once I had opened it though. The first time I gave up, but when I went back to trying again it collapsed with a good amount of effort. After using it for a second time it wasn’t as hard to collapse but still not all that easy. I used it a couple more times before leaning a little too hard on it and breaking it in half 😅😢. I had my fun with it and there was no buyers remorse, but I wouldn’t pay more than $5-7 next time around.

Pretty good but be careful
Decently sturdy for how light it is and works fine with practice.Only complaint is the springlock that stops the staff from extending when not in use is pretty cheap and makes me worry it will go off on its own.Don't let children play with it as it springs open with considerable force and can hurt pretty bad.Not bad for the price I guess.

Open outside first
It wasn't opened outside first. I recommend open it outside for the first time.
