A shoveler's shovel
This is a classic shovel from the old True Temper Pony series, rebranded as Ames. Although not as impeccably forged as earlier versions, it's still worlds better than the stamped-blade bargains populating most garden centers. The superior design of its double-tapered forged blade with an extended, fully-closed socket is no longer found on mass-produced shovels. Its 4-1/2" lift is an excellent compromise for general ditching and digging; those wishing only to load loose materials or to ditch with vertical walls might do well to select another model from this series. Anyone expecting to wield a shovel for extended time should consider investing in a Pony.
