How often do users have to calibrate this meter and how accurate is it ?

The unit tracks when it's time for calibration by displaying a check mark in the corner of the LCD display for 30 days. When that expires the check disappears. However I use my probe daily and have gone a few months without calibrating with no loss in accuracy. And when I ran the simple calibration routine it showed the unit was still in perfect calibration. That means there is no loss in a accuracy if you exceed the 30 day window.
If I notice an unexpected drift in pH, I calibrate. But honestly, rarely needed.
Calibration consists of soaking the tip of the probe in two separate solutions- 4.01 and 7.01. I use a glass shot glass for this to conserve the amount of calibration solution used each time. Give the unit a minute for the automatic temperature compensation to equalize, then hit calibrate button. Remove the unit from the first solution, replace with the second solution, and repeat. When both calibrations are completed, the check mark appears on the LCD display.
I've had my unit for over 10 years and the only thing I've had to do is rinse the probe after each use, and replace the batteries a couple of times a year.
Be sure to store the unit with the tip submerged about 1 in in the water or potassium chloride solution. I use a small glass jar for this which holds the probe up right.
This is a quality product which should last literally for decades. And if you ever do have any problems the company's customer support is excellent. They replaced a TDS meter of mine that I purchased from old stock at a going out of business sale. The unit was difficult to calibrate, requiring several iterations before it would finally take. When I contacted their customer support to ask if I was doing something wrong they said no, and shipped a replacement same day. They only asked that I returned the old unit once I received the new one. What's so special about that? The unit was out of warranty. They replaced it anyway.

Is there a pad in the cap that absorbs elcteode storage solution?

Yes there is a small piece of sponge material in the cap that you can apply storage solution whenever you plan to leave the cap on. I recommend that if you will be using your pen daily, you get a small glass cup ( the 100ml measuring cups work ideal) and keep storage solution in this cup and keep pen placed in this as opposed to removing and replacing cap continuously. I generally mix 20ml of storage solution with 30ml of distilled water to keep in cup for pen.

Yes, it uses a single AAA battery, which is included.

Question 4

When calibrated the check mark doesn’t reappear with the 7.0 solution and it shows err on the display for the 4.0 can this be fixed?

I just went through this.  Blue lab told me to make sure: I had properly cleaned the pen before calibrating, the pen was properly hydrated, and the calibration fluids were fresh. With all those boxes checked offered to send me an rma number and gave me a 4-6 week return window. If your pen was purchased recently I'd talk to Amazon customer service first. Good luck.
