600mm is to the centres of the end fixings. Add + 50mm for the overall length of rail

So the dimensions for the fixed towel rail are 450mm between the centres of each securing plate, the overall dimension is 504mm including the securing plates., so you need a patch of wall at least 504mm wide. I know what you mean about a different item being shown but there is a diagram on the page of the actual towel rail, I think its 3rd picture in (middle one).
