Moonstruck: DE (RPKG/DVD)

Cher won the Academy Award for Best Actress in this 1987 romantic comedy for her portrayal of Loretta Castorini, an Italian-American widow who, much to her surprise, finds true love again in her fiance's estranged brother. A complex situation, for sure, but it makes for great comedy. :)) Loretta's life at the beginning of the film is rather mundane and ordinary, evidenced by her conservative appearance and going through the motions. She is seemingly content with this lifestyle and her engagement to the meek Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), whom she does not love but knows is a good man. Loretta, an outspoken New Yorker, clearly is the dominant party in the relationship and, believing her first marriage was cursed due to not following tradition, insists that tradition be carefully followed this time. All goes well until Loretta goes to meet Johnny's estranged, hotheaded brother Ronny (Nicolas Cage) to invite him to the wedding. Sparks unexpectedly fly between the pair, and tradition is quickly chucked out the window! Loretta's drab existence is no more as she struggles with her situation and decides which Cammareri brother is best suited for her. Moonstruck also contains an interesting subplot with Loretta's parents, played by the remarkable Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). Their marriage is falling apart, sadly, and needs a magical bolt of love to reignite it. Will the enormous full moon over New York City cast that much-needed spell on them as it did for Loretta? All of the actors did a superb job, bringing lots of humor and warmth to their respective roles. Credit must also go to director Norman Jewison and writer John Patrick Shanley, who wrote a fantastic script and deservedly won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Moonstruck also includes a wonderful soundtrack. You'll definitely feel like you're in an Italian-American home and neighborhood, and the music from Puccini's opera La boheme, especially "Musetta's Waltz," is ideal for enhancing the film's overall mood. I cannot say enough good things about Moonstruck. I love this movie so much, I actually went to the Castorini house, located in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, in October 2018 (see the attached photo). It was amazing to see it in person and be where a number of scenes were filmed. I hope you enjoy this warm, witty and wonderful movie as much as I do.

One of my all time favorite movies!

This is the second time I've watched Moonstruck and it was every bit as charming the second time as it was the first. It is so easy to start caring about the characters and develop a concern for their happiness. Cher, in her Oscar winning role as Loretta Castorini, a 37 year old widowed book keeper, is a completely sympathetic character and wins your heart as she seeks to find companionship even if it's loveless. Nicholas Cage turns in a powerful performance as Ronny Cammareri, a tortured young man who was abandoned by his fiancé after an accident that cost him part of his hand. The chemistry between the two of them works beautifully on the screen and draws the viewer into the turmoil each of them faces as they see their lives and plans dramatically upset by the others arrival on the scene. All of the supporting roles headed up by Olympia Dukakis's Oscar winning role as Rose Castorini, Loretta's mother, are well performed, convincing and totally satisfying. The icing on the cake for those of us, who love opera, is the use of music from La Boheme. What is of particular interest is how selections taken from the opera parallel the action in the story. As Ronny and Loretta's love breaks forth the gorgeous music from the love duet in Act 1 of La Boheme fills the room. Other selections from the opera are used to reflect the problems and progress of their relationship. In summary, this is a keeper, worthy of repeated watching's; some of the romance scenes, although relatively modest by today's standards, gives this move a PG rating. On the whole, however, it leaves the viewer feeling good about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness. I recommend it highly!

My favorite movie!

I adore the movies. I love a good story. I am in awe of great story-telling, and I maintain that Moonstruck holds one of the finest "wrap-ups"...EVAH!!!! The sequential events at the Breakfast Table, soar as an operatic masterpiece. Body language, facial expressions, and vocal cadence, prove to be SPOT ON. The Family dynamics are full, present, and genuine. It's now 2012. Moonstruck was released in 1987. 26-27 years later, it stands up as one of the great story-telling films. My daughter (now 10 yrs old) has seen it 10-12 times in her short life. It is a "staple" when we visit Nana and Grandpy...dinner and a movie. My parents still own (and watch, regularly), their VHS copy of this film. I just sent them the DVD "whoop-de-doo" (deluxe) version to replace the VHS. Quite frankly, I'm scared, now. After reading the reviews of the Moonstruck(DVD)Deluxe Edition, I can only hope that the original film is intact. I would be truly sad if the DVD held less content than the VHS. It's slated for a 7/12/12 delivery. We will find out soon enough. All I can say is, don't mess with a good thing and don't s*** where you eat.

Great book

It is an interesting view of some people's lives in Little Italy in New York City in the 1980's. Mainly it is a great romantic comedy along with scenes of the lives of several other family members. You will not be disappointed. A bonus is hearing Dean Martin sing the theme song and views of Lincoln Center with some music from the wonderful Verdi opera La Boheme.

(formerly a THREE-STAR review) GOOD NEWS AND ALTERED COMMENTS!! BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT!!! "Moonstruck" is a fabulous modern comedy/romance, a classic!! I LOVE this film, and you will, too! I had complained in my previous comment about the lack of widescreen theatrical release format in the previous release of this film, but I have just received word straight from the horse's mouth (MGM, via e-mail at their website) that the re-release of 'Moonstruck' on DVD (Nov.) will be available in either full-frame or (finally!) widescreen. AND they told me, in answer to my direct question, that 'Moonstruck' was shot in a full-frame 1.33:1 aspect ratio; theatrical presentation was 1.85:1. (Huh?) I found out that most 1.85:1 aspect ratio movies are actually shot in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, with the intention that the top and bottom of the frames will be trimmed (matted) for 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical presentation. The cinematograper and director frame the shots with this in mind. The result of this is that the movie can be transferred easily to video without doing a pan-and-scan treatment of the photography for full-framed TV presentation. In other words, you're not missing anything in the full-screen framing. This is much preferred by the director, but still not ideal. In fact, you get MORE than the director and cinematographer intended you to see, so the framing of the shots is a bit tall, less subject-focused than intended for cinematic presentation. This is by far a better compromise than a pan-and-scan transfer: rather than losing portions of the picture and ruining the framing, you just get some extra film that the director considers superfluous. It's still a compromise, and as you watch the film, it could mean the difference between a great shot and merely a good one. So I personally still prefer theatrical release format, but I don't begrudge those who dislike widescreen their full-frame option, especially if they're not missing parts of the picture. I must say though that it surprises me how many people out there are bothered by widescreen movies on the normal 1.33:1 television. You get used to it quickly, unless you LET it bother you. (Have you noticed all the commercials and TV programs shot in widescreen recently? You probably haven't, so look for them!) As an owner of only a 27" TV (new), and a 20" before that, I say you can enjoy widescreen on TV! I would now buy this DVD even if it were only full frame. GEORGE'S RECIPE FOR INCREASED DVD AND VHS SALES: the movie studios should inform us on the back of all video releases as to what alterations have been made for the video release. If it says it's pan-and-scan, I won't touch it, but if it's this other method, I might. Many feel the same as I. I have many DVDs with widescreen on one side and full-screen on the other: the perfect compromise!

On se trouve, aux USA, au sein d'une famille italienne hilarante, excentrique, passionnée, irrésistible, à l'image de nos amis italiens que j'apprécient tant. Un film de Norman Jewinson inoubliable qui vous fera passer de bons moments si vous aimez les romances. One approaches "star vehicles" with caution, and Cher is so wildly unpredictable that caution is sometimes needed, but here, throw caution to the wind: "Moonstruck" is one of the most delightful, beguiling comedies you will ever see. It is a wonderful example of ensemble acting, with the principal characters working superbly together to reinforce the warmth and comedy. Cher and Dukakis turn in superb performances as daughter and mother, Dukakis giving a beautifully modulated, controlled rendition. Cher is a revelation, both visually and dramatically. If all you have seen of Cage is the appalling "Leaving Los Vegas" or the travesty that was "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", forget them and see him play an operatic character, the baker who loves Puccini and who lives his life like a character from grand opera. There are some delightful moments when the script matches the operatic soundtrack -- "Your tiny hand is frozen" is a hoot -- and some of Dukakis's acid comments to Cher are beautifully timed, delivered dead-pan, and immensely effective. The Italian food which features heavily in almost every scene will make your mouth water: it is impossible to watch Dukakis cooking breakfast without wishing for a place at her table. This is the movie to put in your DVD player on a wet Sunday afternoon, grab some chocolates and a cashmere blanket, sit back, and enjoy!
