Milk [Blu-ray]

As this film seeks to demonstrate, all gay men owe a debt to Harvey Milk. Combining archive footage, which almost makes this biopic a documentary, with acute attention to detail, this film's two hours completely captivated me. The film depicts Milk's life and career after he moved to Frisco from New York in 1972 up until his assassination in 1978. The whole experience is cleverly framed by Milk dictating his autobiography into a tape recorder.The attention to detail not only is directed to cars, dress, hairstyles, or even to the 1970s films being shown at the local cinema depicted on screen, or even to the fact that it was shot in San Francisco City Hall and in Milk's own shop in the Castro. Writing in the London Review of Books, Michael Wood perceptively noted how "this work is not a copy of an actual world but the resurrection of a vanished one."The cause of such a comment was the fact that the actors look so much like the parts they were playing (as is borne out by the end credits). Sean Penn is totally convincing. His reaction to the realisation that he has won his campaign in California against what was known as Proposition Six is quite moving.Alas, there is no commentary from director Gus van Sant on my DVD and the deleted scenes are few - only three, lasting four minutes in total. But my DVD has three interlinked documentaries lasting thirty-six minutes. The first, `Remembering Harvey', comprises interviews with six of Harvey's associates whose parts are played by actors in the film or appear in the film themselves; the second, `Hollywood Comes to San Francisco', is full of comments from the film's participants; whilst the third, `Marching for Equality', sees those who were there reminiscing about the march. However, throughout all these comments and interviews, neither Gus van Sant nor Sean Penn contribute.

I am not like so many other critics, of new and old movies that are releast by amazon.this move and its amazing actors and ture story clips makes it a movie that i have watched almost 17 times.its the best. I love the wonderful way they picked every one who looks just like ever member of this out standing movment. That happen during the 1970s the fight for gay rites and gay workers in and around the United States.Sean Penn was indead the perfect leader of this group, out many of the other actors who played there parts to perfection.I may not be gay myself but even my heart was broken after Harvey Milk was shot.By a true coward, who just could not stand to see a gay man play such a strong roll and win so many hearts of American's.indeed it was unjust, the way they let this man, Escape murder in the first degree.Thankfuly his own guilt got the better of him and after, just being in prison for only 5 years.He ended his life by his own hands and justis was complete.It is a must see movie with a five star rating just really is not enoughas i said before, i like to tell other people. How i saw this film with my heart. Not just pick holes, roast the actors, hammer the writers and just be a out of time, run of the mill critic.Weather its good or bad, i will tell you how it maded me feel and how i hope you too will see the beauty of this great movie.

I am a straight male in my early 30s, and I confess that I didn't know who Harvey Milk was before watching this film. I am into a wide variety of film genres (as my review history reflects), and picked this movie up not knowing what to expect, but went for it on the strength of the (deserved) critical praise is has received. In short, it is one of the best films I have seen in a long time.Sean Penn gives a deservedly acclaimed performance as Milk, a charismatic, entertaining individual. The supporting cast - none of whom I personally was familiar with - also put in excellent performances.Without meaning to brush over the important work and advancements Milk made on behalf of the LGBT community, this is a story that appeals far beyond the gay community, and a classic story about standing up for the downtrodden.The film runs at two hours; in some movies, I find this a bit long and my attention starts to wander, but in the case of 'Milk' I found it the perfect length; it needs the full two hours to tell the story, and I can honestly say I did not feel it to sag at any point.It's hard to accurately class this film - for its most part, it is a drama-biography, but it also has some nice moments of comedy, and is also very touching at points.There is little I can find to gripe about with this movie. I did find that Harvey met the two big loves of the story (first the charming Scott, later the demanding Jack) and fell in love with (and was in bed with) barely after meeting them; I did wonder if this was tweaked to suit that pacing of the film.Some have commented that they felt the film concentrates on Harvey's love life too much, neglecting further detailing of his political career. I personally did not feel this at all - I found both elements to be well balanced, and think it was important to give an overview of Milk's whole life, not just political, to get a more rounded view of him.Regarding the DVD release, extras are three deleted (and pretty inconsequential) deleted scenes, a 15 minute documentary looking profiling Harvey Milk, a 13 minute making of featurette, and a third looking at the recreation of the candlelight vigil (but which also strays into other areas). There are also international and UK versions of the film's trailer. Ordinarily I like to see an audio commentary on DVD releases, but maybe it was felt this film didn't need one.All-in-all, this is a really enjoyable movie. You don't have to have gay interests to become engrossed in it, and I am glad that it is bringing the tale of Harvey Milk to a new generation, including myself. And at under a fiver, you can't go wrong. Filme, die Biographien sind und über berühmte Menschen berichten, gibt es ja viele. In den letzten Jahren ist das fast inflationär. Doch dieser Film hat seine Berechtigung, mehr als eine Berechtigung, er gehört zu dem Besten (das ist nicht übertrieben!), was ich an Biographien aus Hollywood bisher gesehen habe!Die Geschichte ist stimmig erzählt, flüssig gedreht, mit Einsprenkseln echter Bilder und wenig Sex. Darum geht es ja auch nicht. Und das macht den Film nicht zu einem platten Erotikstreifen, sondern zu einer starken Biographie über eine starke Person! Hier sieht man wieder die Meisterschaft des genialen Gus van Sant, einer der außergewöhnlichsten Regisseure des aktuellen Hollywood!Auch die Geschichte hat es in sich; es ist gut, dass sie erzählt wird als Film, dann erreicht sie ein großes Publikum. Das zunächst eintönige Leben von Harvey Milk (dargestellt von einem wundervollen Sean Penn in seiner vielleicht besten Rolle überhaupt), eines einfachen Versicherungsangestellten, ändert sich, als er an seinem 39. Geburtstag den hübschen Scotty (dargestellt vom genialen Luso-amerikanischen Schauspieler James Franco!) kennen und lieben lernt. Beide ziehen Anfang der 1970er Jahre in die damalige "Schwulenhauptstadt" der USA, San Francisco. Milk ändert sich radikal, eröffnet einen kleinen Laden und wird Hippie. Interessant hier: Es zeigt, ein Mensch kann sich in jedem Lebensalter noch ändern und einen neuen Weg einschlagen. Es ist also nicht nur bei Heiligen möglich, sondern auch bei allen Menschen, dass nur am Rande. Milk und seine neuen Freunde werden mit der Gewalt und dem Elend der dortigen Schwulen konfrontiert und Milk entscheidet sich, für die Demokratische Partei für den Stadtrat zu kandidieren. Sein Widersacher ist Dan White. Milk kämpft wie ein Löwe für die Rechte Homosexueller und wird später doch tragischerweise ermordet. Mehr verrate ich hier nicht. Ein Stadtrat in San Francisco ist in etwa mit einem Stadtverordneten in Deutschland zu vergleichen, kein sehr mächtiges Amt, aber Milk war tatsächlich in den USA (und wohlmöglich vielleicht weltweit?) der einzige Schwule, der in ein politisches Amt gewählt wurde, zumindest der offen schwul war.Der Film hat mich sehr berührt. Er ist nicht laut, obwohl er viele Szenen hat, wo es um Demos und ähnliches, sicher keine leisen Veranstaltungen, geht. Van Sant hat einen tollen Film abgeliefert, den man immer wieder sehen sollte. Und ein unglaubliches und ewiges Erbe für Harvey Milk (1930-1978) und den Kampf für die Emanzipation der Schwulen in den 1970er Jahren ist- mit Auswirkungen bis heute!

Sean Penn dà un'ennesima prova attoriale (se mai ce ne fosse bisogno) in questo film che racconta la storia di Harvey Milk, gay, e attivista del movimento dei diritti degli omosessuali. Film intenso che tocca vari temi, oltre a quello dell'omosessualità, come l'amicizia, l'amore e anche il tradimento. Ci offre altresì un quadro di come funziona il mondo politico, dove si devono affrontare raggiri e voltafaccia, dove alle volte bisogna cercare alleanze e scendere a qualche compromesso per la propria causa. Personaggio volitivo, gran combattente e mai domo nonostante tutte le difficoltà a contrastare una mentalità bacchettona e perbenista. Qualità del BD ottima. Da vedere.

Mich hat dieses Drama bewegt, da Harvey Milk facettenreich und realistisch dargestellt wird. Die Szenen erscheinen sehr realistisch. Der Film hat mein Interesse für die homosexuelle Bürgerrechtsbewegung geweckt. Es ist eine wirklich spannende Biografie-Verfimlung gelungen, denn die dramatische Entwicklung der Handlung fesselt die Zuschauer. Ich empfehle diesen Stoff besonders für politisch Interessierte und für Homosexuelle. Letztlich verdeutlicht die anrührende Biografie Milks, dass die Rechte von Schwulen und Lesben über einen langen Zeitraum erstritten und erkämpft werden mussten (und dass diese Rechte nicht selbstverständlich sind - besonders außerhalb der westlichen Welt).

In den Extras zum Film wird Harvey Milk als "Schutzpatron der Schwulen" bezeichnet und diesen Titel hat er sich redlich verdient. Selbst wenn sein Leben sicherlich wie in derartigen Biopics üblich mit dem Weichzeichner bearbeitet worden ist, so hat er unstrittig als erster offen schwul lebender Mann, der in ein öffentliches Amt gewählt worden ist, seinen Beitrag zur Akzeptanz Homosexueller geleistet.Detailiert und realistisch zeigt der Film Milks siebenjährigen Weg ins Amt, auf dem er mit jede Menge Vorurteilen und Widerständen zu kämpfen hat. Bis zu seiner Ermordung 1978 war er gerade mal ein Jahr als Stadtrat im Amt, aber hat eine Bewegung in Gang gesetzt, die nicht mehr zu stoppen war und letztlich zur gesellschaftlichen Liberalisierung enorm beigetragen hat. Ich finde in dem Zusammenhang schön, dass er in dem Film 1970 als 40-jähriger sagt, er habe in seinem Leben bislang nichts geleistet, und nur 8 Jahre später gilt er als Ikone und Pionier der Schwulenbewegung.Es ist also nie zu spät, sich für etwas einzusetzen, und manchmal braucht es offenbar ein wenig Zeit, bis man den Mut dafür findet und die Gelegenheit günstig ist.Schön fand ich auch die Szenen, in denen alle aus den Schwulenbars auf die Straße liefen, um einem Schwulen zu helfen, der Opfer von Polizeigewalt wurde. Diese Solidarität ist heutzutage nicht mehr in der Schwulenszene vorhanden, aber glücklicherweise in dem Maße auch nicht mehr notwendig. Trotzdem berührte es mich auf eine Art, diese Anfänge zu sehen. Es war einerseits erschreckend, andererseits auch ein wenig "die gute alte Zeit", in der Menschen sich noch engagiert haben und aus den Kneipen auf die Straße gelaufen sind, um sich mit jemandem zu solidarisieren.Ich habe den Film im Kino gesehen und fand ihn total super, muss aber zugeben, dass er mir auf DVD stellenweise etwas lang vorkam. Der englische Originalton ist auch nicht berauschend von der Qualität her. Dennoch finde ich den Film nach wie vor sehr sehenswert, allein schon wegen der großartigen schauspielerischen Leistungen, aber auch aufgrund der ermutigenden Botschaft.Die Extras sind auch interessant, es gibt Interviews mit noch lebenden Aktivisten von einst und mit den Schauspielern, sowie Einblicke in die Dreharbeiten. Jedoch kommt Sean Penn in den Extras absolut gar nicht vor. Ich habe mich gefragt, ob er zu divenhaft war, mal ein kurzes Interview zu geben oder dergleichen, aber es ist ja seine Sache. Dennoch hat er großartig gespielt.

Il film e gli attori sono notevoli. Le tematiche trattate sono molto delicate e importanti. Impegnativo ma al tempo stesso coinvolgente, ne consiglio la visione a tutti coloro i quali vogliano avere un'idea di alcuni eventi del passato legati alle rivendicazioni civili degli omosessuali.

Ho ordinato questo film per tre motivi: la tematica, per Sean Penn, e per il fatto che si basa su una storia vera. Purtroppo non mi è piaciuto il film. Soprattutto l'interpretazione di Sean Penn mi ha delusa. Peccato.

Excellent film qui nous fait réfléchir sur les valeurs humaines d'un côté et sur la bêtise humaine de l'autre. À voir!Cependant, pas de version française sur ce bluray, vraiment dommage.

This is/was history. What happened in San Francisco should hurt anyone who cares about humanity. Excellent film, well crafted, and important, if painful, to watch.

Über den Inhalt wurde schon viel gesagt, das spare ich mir jetzt zu wiederholen.Der Film zeigt ein Stück Geschichte um Freiheit und Recht, von jeden von uns.Hoffe, dass mit Hilfe dieses Filmes, Harvey Milk unvergesslich bleibt.Dank Sean Penn's schauspielerischer Glanzleistung! Es hätte keinen besseren für die Rolle gegeben. (So wie für so mach anderen Film). Sean Penn wird immer besser. Weiß auch nicht wo das enden wird?Glaubwürdigkeit auf der Leinwand, die nachwirkt.Sehr sehenswert!

Adoro questo film. Raccontato in modo intenso e commovente ti coinvolge inevitabilmente e ti lega al personaggio di Milk.Basato sulla storia vera di H. Milk che combatté in prima linea, negli anni 70, per i diritti degli omosessuali in California.Lo consiglio vivamente.

Ce film raconte la vie de Harvey Milk, mais qui est t'il? Il juste le premier hommepolitique ouvertement gay des états unis. Il a fait avancé les mentalité, fait évoluer la vieet permis aux homosexuels de vivre mieux (il y a encore du travail) et de pouvoiraimer librement, travailler, et même se marier ! Bref revenons en au film : Il est justemerveilleux, il n'est pas triste malgré la difficulté du thème, et passionnant. Le jeu de Sean Pennest vraiment parfait (comme a son habitude). Je pense que ce film, est pour tout ceux qui veulentapprendre du combat d'un homme, a un moment ou les choses n'était vraiment pas gagner.
