Medical Terminology and Clinical Procedures: 3rd Edition (Revised)

Who said studying was boring?!
I buy this book in for my students who are studying Medical Terminology in preparation for the AMSPAR exam. I want to do the AMSPAR myself next time (they are run on set dates in January, June & November) so thought I had better start reading up.I had a quick flick through the book and was hooked! The first thing that sparked my interest was the section on Preventive Medicine. I was astonished that a 175ml glass of wine - which is often served in pubs now - counts as 2 units of alcohol. Women are only supposed to have 2-3 units per day so a 175ml glass is your limit if you're on the small side and watching out for your health. The other thing that interested me (on a purely academic, non-personal, level you understand!) was the section on obesity. It has good charts, written in metric and imperial, so they are easy to understand. The Appendices at the back are what our students are most focussed on. Appendix I is a list of prefixes, meaning the start of words. If you know these you can often break down medical words you don't understand and work them out. For example, anti- means 'against', and ante- means 'before; trans' means 'across/through' - so you can work out that the transverse colon goes across the body, not up and down. I love stuff like this, you only need to know a few things to start sounding quite smart!Appendix 2 has word roots and Appendix 3 has suffixes. So -aemia relates to 'blood' (as in anaemia, decrease in the normal number of red blood cells in the blood). Most people over a certain age will be familiar with one suffix in particular - -ology ("You got an ology?!", Maureen Lipman's line from the old BT ads). -ology means 'study of/science of'.The rest of the book is split into logical sections and can be dipped into as a reference or read through as part of a Medical Terminology course. When I started working for Pitman, I asked an experienced Manager of another centre what books he recommended as extra reading for our students. This was the only one he suggested for our Medical Terminology students. He said it's the best and it is better to stick to one book. The author has done a superb job of making a tricky subject interesting and relevant. I also like the layout of the book. It is printed on good quality, slightly glossy paper so feels nice and is durable. The writing is in an easy-to-read black font with headings in soft purple. Charts and images are also in shades of black and purple. All in all, highly recommended.
